The film follows nine confused and desperate New Yorkers who are looking for love in all the wrong places: an inexperienced prostitute (Vera Farmiga), a troubled contractor (Domenick Lombardozzi), an unstable housewife (Jill Hennessy), her repressed husband (Malcolm Gets), a smitten artist (Steve Buscemi), a beautiful gallery worker (Rosario Dawson), her free-spirited boyfriend (Adrien Grenier), a lonely psychic (Carol Kane), and a suicidal businessman (Michael Imperioli). As these characters listlessly bump into and out of one another's lives, it becomes painfully clear just how desperate they are to make a connection. By using a non-traditional, episodic chain reaction technique, Mattei is able to better represent the broad range of character types and personalities that populate New York City. And while these individuals may be superficially distinct based on profession or personal appearance, their inner torment is the same. They are all lonely, unhappy, and desperately searching for an interaction that will numb their pain, if only for a few fleeting moments. Unfortunately for them, Mattei doesn't provide any fairy tale endings, which brings even more reality to their already depressing lives. [More]

  • Love In The Time Of Money
  • In the provocative style of SEX, LIES AND VIDEOTAPE, LOVE IN THE TIME OF MONEY is a seductively riveting story starring Steve Buscemi (GHOST WORLD, FARGO), Rosario Dawson (25TH HOUR, MEN IN BLACK II), and Jill Hennessy (TV's CROSSING JORDAN, EXIT WOUNDS) in an all-star cast! What do a hooker, an embezzler, an art collector, a receptionist, and a bored housewife have in common? More than you think! For nine unique New Yorkers, one day becomes a turning point in their lives when their erotic encounters interconnect. You're sure to agree with critics everywhere who praised this exceptionally sexy motion picture and its high level of entertainment!

There has been a string of ensemble cast romances recently ... but Peter Mattei's Love in the Time of Money sets itself apart by forming a chain of relationships that come full circle to end on a positive (if tragic) note.

It doesn't help that the director and cinematographer Stephen Kazmierski shoot on grungy video, giving the whole thing a dirty, tasteless feel.

The overall fabric is hypnotic, and Mr. Mattei fosters moments of spontaneous intimacy.

More concerned with its gimmicky tag-team structure of storytelling than it is with credible, engaging content.

Despite the evocative aesthetics evincing the hollow state of modern love life, the film never percolates beyond a monotonous whine.

An intriguing cinematic omnibus and round-robin that occasionally is more interesting in concept than in execution.

I'm sure the filmmakers found this a remarkable and novel concept, but anybody who has ever seen an independent film can report that it is instead a cheap cliché.
