Movie Info

This provocative drama paints an unsensationalized psychological portrait of an otherwise well-educated woman who falls into an abusive relationship with a malicious, manipulative man with a history of affairs with women who later committed suicide. Though shattered during the break up, Hedda Amerson (Robin Wright Penn) eventually put the pain of that relationship behind her and reassembled her life. Her newfound peace is threatened when District Attorney Dietrickson (William Hurt) asks her to take the stand against her former lover, who has been charged with negligent homicide following the death of his latest girlfriend. He also asks Debra, a girl in a wheelchair to talk about her relationship with the man in hopes of establishing a pattern of abuse. Unfortunately for Dietrickson, Hedda, whose relationship with the defendant culminated with her falling out a window, has twisted the situation around in her head and lays all responsibility for his behavior and her reaction to it on her own shoulders. The more she talks on the stand, the more the D.A.'s case goes awry. Neither Hedda's parents (Joanna Cassidy and Paul Dooley) nor her sister Brett (Amy Madigan), a ruthless attorney, are able to comprehend Hedda's feelings, especially since she has twice tried to kill herself since the relationship ended. The dialogue-heavy story unfolds slowly and with little concrete background information, leaving the audience with a tantalizing and emotional puzzle.more
