Consensus: The bitingly truthful Lovely & Amazing is a smart and perceptive female character study.

Academy-Award nominated actresses Catherine Keener ("Being John Malkovich") and Brenda Blethyn ("Secrets & Lies") star in Nicole Holofcener's follow-up feature to her critically acclaimed debut "Walking and Talking." A finely observed comedy, LOVELY & AMAZING is an intimate family portrait of four hapless but resilient women and the bittersweet lessons they learn in keeping up with the hectic demands of their individual neuroses.
Jane Marks (Blethyn) is the matriarch of a confused trio of daughters that seems to have nothing in common, except for a peculiar sort of idealism -- a heady brew of vanity, insecurity and humor. Former homecoming queen Michelle (Keener), the eldest daughter, is in a loveless marriage with a spouse who does not appreciate her decidedly obscure artistic endeavors. Younger sister Elizabeth (Emily Mortimer), an insecure actress whose career is beginning to take off, compulsively takes home stray dogs, saving them whether or not they need to be saved.
Only the youngest sister, Annie, an adopted African American eight-year old, seems to stand a chance at rising above the family's legacy. But on the threshold of what promises to be a confusing adolescence, Annie has developed a preoccupation with her appearance -- natural enough for a pre-teen-- but given her adoptive family's history, quite possibly a hint of what's to come.
Each of the women seeks redemption in her own haphazard way, but whatever salvation they find is illusory and shortlived.

Reviews for Lovely & Amazing
I couldn't shake the feeling that half this movie was stolen from outtakes of A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy and Another Woman.
[Holofcener's] keen ear for dialogue is a double-edged sword: All of her characters turn insightful, sometimes even fascinating, phrases. But they never shut up.
Has a lovely feel, interactions that are real & unafraid to broach life's insecurities -- ie: personal appearance from hair to body fat. However, doesn't add up to amazing.
"Lovely's" strength lies in its ability to stress the unremarkable and make it interesting.
A sharp, articulate study of why we say some of the things that we do and how our words and actions can be (mis)perceived by others.
The movie comes across as some kind of cinematic therapy for the writer-director -- and she has a lot of emotional baggage to unpack.
Because the characters are more like collections of quirks than integrated personalities, you never quite understand why anyone does anything.
Transcends the 'chick flick' label with a touch so light and smart it never has to bother trying to win over your sympathies to either sex.
If this slice-of-life film was a home movie, these would be the parts you leave on the floor of your editing room.
One of the funniest and most endearing films of the year . . . it is difficult in an appearance-obsessed culture to go against the grain and find beauty within.
A chick flick of a particularly intelligent, ruthless, and loving sort.
I guess it's what they call of slice-of-life movie, not that anyone would want to order a slice of the lives depicted.
Covering the bases, however, is not the same as offering new insights into fairly well-traveled psychosexual through-lines.
The feminine tone of “Lovely & Amazing” is not going to draw droves of guys, except to make points on a date.
Holofcener has a terrific ability to conjure breathing characters out of the quirks and ticks of human foibles
Holofcener has crafted a comedy which acknowledges not just our neuroses about our bodies, but also the messy, ambivalent complexities of adult family relationships.
