In the fictional kingdom of Navarre, King Ferdinand (Alessandro Nivola) and three chums take vow to study rigorously and avoid women for three years. Their vow is immediately tested with the surprise visit of the Princess of France (Alicia Silverstone) with three ladies-in-waiting. Romantic merriment ensues as each of the men fall in love and attempt to woo the ladies without being caught. Branagh's film features musical numbers by Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, and others performed in the classic style of 1930s MGM musicals. [More]

  • Love's Labour's Lost
  • With Kenneth Branagh (WILD WILD WEST, CELEBRITY), Alicia Silverstone (BLAST FROM THE PAST), and Nathan Lane (AT FIRST SIGHT, MOUSE HUNT) leading a stellar ensemble cast, Stanley Donen and Martin Scorsese present a sexy, glamorous, and fun 1930's-style musical that's earned terrific critical acclaim! The King of Navare (Alessandro Nivola -- MANSFIELD PARK, FACE/OFF) and his three best friends think that they've sworn off love in the pursuit of intellectual enlightenment. But when the Princess of France (Silverstone) and her beautiful attendants arrive for a diplomatic visit, their high-minded plans are turned completely upside down! Then, as war rages and secret passions burn, loyalty and devotion are tested like never before! Also featuring hilarious Matthew Lillard (SHE'S ALL THAT, SCREAM) and the classic songs of Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, and more -- go back in time and allow yourself to be swept away by this wonderfully entertaining motion picture treat!

We all know who's going to pair off with whom in the end, but Branagh does get us there in some considerable style.

Even though Love's Labour's Lost is, in showbiz terms, a turkey stuffed with chestnuts, you wouldn't trade it for a pot of gold.

It's all light and frothy and harmless, but, for some, cotton candy won't substitute for the denser, more dangerous joys of chocolate fudge.

This film is colorful and flighty and insubstantial and sentimental, and exults in it.

Alicia Silverstone was better as Batgirl than in this piece of garbage. I don't think she even understood what she was saying.

Maybe Kenneth Branagh should have left the Hollywood musical where he found it, back in the 1930s.

Both a paean to lyric poetry and Hollywood’s fondly remembered theatrically-set musical burlesques, LLL is quite audacious for its bubbly lightheadedness.

Though the tunes of Gershwin, Porter, Kern and Berlin on display here are great too, their mere presence can't overcome the problems of adaptation, casting and direction that mar the picture.
