In the fictional kingdom of Navarre, King Ferdinand (Alessandro Nivola) and three chums take vow to study rigorously and avoid women for three years. Their vow is immediately tested with the surprise visit of the Princess of France (Alicia Silverstone) with three ladies-in-waiting. Romantic merriment ensues as each of the men fall in love and attempt to woo the ladies without being caught. Branagh's film features musical numbers by Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, and others performed in the classic style of 1930s MGM musicals. [More]

Reviews for Love's Labour's Lost
We all know who's going to pair off with whom in the end, but Branagh does get us there in some considerable style.
Even though Love's Labour's Lost is, in showbiz terms, a turkey stuffed with chestnuts, you wouldn't trade it for a pot of gold.
This film is colorful and flighty and insubstantial and sentimental, and exults in it.
The most exultant epiphany of romantic celebration I've seen in a film--ever.
Both a paean to lyric poetry and Hollywood’s fondly remembered theatrically-set musical burlesques, LLL is quite audacious for its bubbly lightheadedness.
A delightful romantic comedy with musical numbers by Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and George Gershwin.
Flaws (most of which are minor) aside, Love's Labour's Lost is an enjoyable trifle.
It's so eager to please, so caught up in its own sunny energies, so seductive to look at, that what might be your resistance never gets off the ground -- or wants to.
It's a delightful blend of past styles and songs that adds a much-needed zest to a dry and dreary movie season.
Making a glitzy, old-school 1930's movie musical out of the Bard's silliest work is exactly the kind of thing that a studio wouldn't do in a million years...
The producer- director- star- screenwriter is an unexpectedly charming musical lead, pleasantly reminiscent of Jimmy Cagney in Yankee Doodle Dandy.
This is one to remember for this year's award nominations, and should bring a smile to any film lover's face.
The effect is weird but it actually kind of works, illuminating both Shakespeare and the artifice of musicals.
