Gently weaving a multifaceted plot, Gianvito tells the story of three New Mexico residents whose lives have been irrevocably altered by the war. The primary tale offers a heartbreaking look at a woman whose Arab husband has met with incredible hostilities due to his ethnic background. The two auxiliary stories concern a young boy reaching an age where he begins to realize the injustices in the world, and a soldier returning from battle and struggling to make an adjustment to a regular existence. A fascinating look at a side of war not often dramatized, THE MAD SONGS OF FERNANDA HUSSEIN illustrates how the battle at home can be just as affecting as any action experienced in the trenches. Reviews for The Mad Songs of Fernanda Hussein
Less an alternative to jingoism than its mirror image, as sure of itself and as disdainful of doubt or uncertainty as the chest-thumping triumphalism of the most fervent right-wing talk show (and much less entertaining).
For every scene that plays like a dramatic reading of a Nation editorial ... Gianvito summons a couple of persuasive formal or rhetorical flourishes.
