Movie Info

French filmmaker Frederic Mitterrand offers a faithful adaptation of Puccini's tragic opera. It was filmed just outside of Bizaerte, Tunisia, which he turned into a faithful reproduction of turn-of-the-century Nagasaki, Japan. Butterfly is a 15-year-old geisha girl who marries an American Naval officer, Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton, while he is on leave. The dastardly Pinkerton only wants to get a little female comfort, but Butterfly takes it all very seriously, something that the consul warns the sailor about. Sure enough, as soon as his furlough ends, the officer boards his ship and takes off without looking back, leaving poor Butterfly to faithfully await his return. With only her maid Suzuki, to keep her company, Butterfly never wavers in her loyal vigil. Three years later, Pinkerton finally returns. Unfortunately, he is accompanied by his American wife and the shattered Butterfly ends her life.more

Besides a visual combination of authentic Japanese realism and picturesque, dream-like cinematography that matches the lushness of Puccini's music, director Frederic Mitterrand gives the opera a distinctively cinematic gravity and subtlety.

Gorgeous, heartrending music, and excellent performances. I love opera, and this is by far the best I've seenyet.

Very well done in an old movie style. Beautiful music and story. Just shows how women sometimes give up everything for a man they love, and a man gives up nothing, uses her, then throws her away. It is still happening today. Same crap, different toilet .
