Nicolas Cage Is Magnum P.I.?
Please let him remake Her Alibi next.

Add another name to the list of actors rumored to be up for the title role in Universal's long-threatened Magnum P.I. adaptation.

IGN Movies reports on the widespread rumors that Nicolas Cage is mulling a star turn as the Hawaii-based, mustached '80s hero, played to iconic perfection by mustached '80s Tom Selleck during the series' 1980-88 run on CBS. Everyone from George Clooney to Matthew McConaughey has supposedly been offered the part, and nothing has come of it yet, but as IGN notes:

According to The Daily Express, "Nicolas likes the mix of comedy and crime-solving in the script." The paper also claims that the project fell apart 18 months ago when Ricky Gervais rejected the notion of playing Higgins to George Clooney's Magnum.

As many of you will recall, the last time Cage played a character in a tropical setting, he strapped on a bear suit and ran around in the jungle for last year's Wicker Man remake. We could only hope for similarly fantastic results out of a Cage-led Magnum P.I. adaptation. Cross your fingers.

Tropical setting? That was British Columbia standing in for Washington State. Jeesh. Obviously, someone hasn't seen Neil Labute's masterwork lately...

Matthew McConaughey I can see playing Magnum but Nic Cage........... give me a break. Sorry Nic, you 've had a couple movies that you actually did act well in but that's it. I think I'm even stretching it by saying 2 movies.....probably more like " Leaving Las Vegas" and that's it.

Why can't they just write a script for Magnum that shows the character 20 years later and use Tom Selleck.
What kills most of these TV to Movie remake productions is that the original actor was so good and made their character so iconic that it's virtually impossible to replace them with another actor. Tom Selleck as Magnum is a prime example.

For anyone who questions Cage's acting ability watch Adapatation and prepare to have your mind blown away.

fung - anything good that Cage has been in is more due to a good screenplay and supporting actors than Nic Cage himself. He sucks. I can't believe his name was even being thrown around when casting for Superman was being considered. Good actors can make you forget they are in a bunch of other movies because they play characters so well. Nic Cage is the same damn character in every film.

I could see McConaughy as Magnum. Gervais as Higgens would have been awesome. Cage is nowhere near a good pick.

I have seen it, loved it, have it, and that's exactly why I asked if he's mental to play Magnum.
