Darabont seem to have conceived this nostalgic tear-jerker in the tradition of Hail the Conquering Hero, without noticing that Preston Sturges's response to small-town patriotism was an astringent shot of satire.

In THE MAJESTIC, Jim Carrey stretches his talents and proves that he can be a credible serious actor with his portrayal of Peter Appleton, a Hollywood B-movie screenwriter who is black listed during the McCarthy era. A car accident costs him his memory, and in the small coastal town where he ends up, he is mistaken for a local hero, presumed dead almost ten years ago in the war. Unable to recall anything of his "past" in the town, Appleton not only embraces his new identity, but becomes a pillar of the community, restoring hope that the residents lost along with many of their young men in World War II. In the process, he discovers new inspiration, new purpose, and a new life. Director Frank Darabont, true to form, tells a leisurely tale of a man's renewed faith in himself and in others. The film is an homage to old-fashioned values and proud-to-be-an-American patriotism, studded with rock-solid performances not just by Carrey, but by film veterans Martin Landau, Hal Holbrook, and Ron Rifkin, among others. Listen as well for cameo voice overs by Garry Marshall, Matt Damon, and Carl and Rob Reiner. [More]

Reviews for The Majestic
The best that can be said about The Majestic is that it may boost Capra's reputation by virtue of comparison.
The performance in this film to watch is veteran actor Martin Landau as the war hero's father.
A warm and loving ode to the magic of film and the golden age of movie making.
There are a lot of problems -- most generic, tired ones -- with The Majestic, but it also overflows with genuine joy.
Visuals often mesh seamlessly with the film's ragtime soundtrack, another treat.
Had Carrey plied his trade in the '50s, he never would have risen above B movies himself, so his workmanlike performance is an appropriate center for the film.
A derivative, self-satisfied fable that couldn't be more treacly and simple-minded if it tried.
By comparison, Patch Adams looks like a tough-minded documentary about medical school.
A treacly, synthetic and wildly overlong drama that aspires to Frank Capra-style uplift, but winds up suffocating you with its aura of bogus, store-bought nostalgia.
So obviously modeled on Capra's films that it begs to be measured against them, and it's not as good.
A pale imitation [of Capra's films] that challenges credulity and tries too hard to win our hearts with schmaltz.
Drowns Carrey's understated performance in cheap sentiment and sticky self-importance.
[Carrey's] natural charisma carries the movie with just the right dose of Jimmy Stewart charm.
Despite Carrey's best efforts and those of fetching newcomer Laurie Holden, Frank Darabont's film is an interminable, smothering tableau of Norman Rockwell pieties.
Two hours of tedium followed by an additional 30 minutes of preaching.
A crock--well-intentioned and slickly made, to be sure, but a crock nonetheless...unbelievably sappy.
There's a germ of something genuine under all the imitation, and the movie works, despite itself.
