Consensus: Major League may be predictable and formulaic, but buoyed by the script's light, silly humor -- not to mention the well-built sports action sequences and funny performances.

Runtime: 1 hr 48 mins

Genre: Comedies

Synopsis: When the widow of the owner of the Cleveland Indians realizes that she is stuck with a small stadium in a cold climate, she decides that a move to a Southern, warmer climate is called for.... When the widow of the owner of the Cleveland Indians realizes that she is stuck with a small stadium in a cold climate, she decides that a move to a Southern, warmer climate is called for. Unfortunately the only way she can unload her stadium is due to low attendance, so she needs to plan for a losing and lackluster season. The team of misfits and losers that she has hired, though, decide that if they really pull through, they may not wind up in last place and not be the losers that the owner thinks that they are. This offbeat baseball comedy, starring Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen, Corbin Bernsen and Rene Russo, was a surprise 1989 hit. [More]

What redeems it is that the action sequences are superbly filmed, climaxing with Sheen's bullish entry into the arena at make-or-break time, the crowd singing 'Wild Thing' in clamouring unison.

A meat and potatoes '80s movie, that maybe doesn't 'taste great,' but at least is 'less filling.' [Blu-ray]

The absurdity of the Indians winning the pennant in 1989 helped make the film a lot of fun, and it was a great little fantasy for Tribe fans back in the day.

No classic, but it is a good example of the way light formulaic genres can be exploited for a little fun and a bunch of cheap laughs.

If you're looking for a sexy, funny baseball movie with depth of character and a thought-provoking examination of love, rent Bull Durham. But if you just want some good laughs, Major League should fill the bill.

The film is so loopy that it glides over its cliches and indulges in some congenial movie-baseball silliness.

Major League holds up today not only as the rare sports-themed comedy to balance goofiness and dynamic game atmospherics seamlessly, but also as a fleeting reminder of baseball's last remnants of participatory charm and gee-whiz curveball worship.

If you feel the desire to rent this puppy, by all means. But don't bother with the sequels.

Slick predictability is about all it has in mind, down to the last trite freeze-frame.

Sometimes funny comedy set in major league baseball with plenty of bawdy slapstick.
