The movie's spirit is somewhere between High School Musical and Hedwig and the Angry Inch; it's at once dorkily wholesome and proudly slutty.
This reviewer has gotten it exactly right. Mamma Mia! is a mess, but it is so charming and goofy that I found it nearly impossible to keep from dancing in the aisle. There is lots one could quibble about, from all the adults being 20 years too old for the plot to the fact that, bless his heart, Pierce Brosnan simply cannot sing. But in the end it just does not matter. The movie is fun and light and escapist and I hope that it will be as big a hit as the stage version.
