There was reportedly a great deal of argument and dissent during the making of the film, and it is reflected in its erratic tone and slovenly, indecisive and increasingly incoherent narrative.

It's a lazy-looking movie, amiable and smart, but so fuzzy, in its imagery and structure, that it suggests the sun is getting to everybody, that they all need a dip in the pool.

Nicholson is as reliably watchable as ever, but is unable to find anything inspired in Carole Eastman's unbelievably unfunny script, while the hapless Barkin is hopelessly at sea as a pathetic squealing pancake.

Rafelson, an accomplished screenwriter, seems unable, or unwilling, to give any shape to this mess.

Man Trouble is abysmally amateurish from start to finish, never making any kind of sense on any level at any time during its running time.

This is all the sadder since director Bob Rafelson, screenwriter Carole Eastman and Nicholson were the moving forces behind Five Easy Pieces, one of the best movies of the early '70s.

Proof that even the most talented actors - in this case, Jack Nicholson and Ellen Barkin -- can make bad choices and turn in mediocre performances in a below-par film.

The movie is a limp comedy of disempowerment, set in a cartoon world where testosterone rules.

Jack Nicholson fans should feel cheated by Man Trouble, an insultingly trivial star vehicle.

Not quite a romance, a thriller or a comedy, it's a movie with an on-going identity crisis.

A forgetable romantic comedy where Nicholson tries to coast on his bad boy charm.

Obviously intended to be a bright and breezy romantic-comedy thriller, it ends up a mangy old mutt of a movie thanks to a charmless script and disastrous casting decisions.
