The problem is, the humour of the material does not combine as well as it should with the filmmaking style. The method is absurdist, and so are the characters, and there's nothing straight to play off.

Leaves us to admire the technique and the music without giving us much more to care about.

No, I refuse to label it a comedy. I refuse to classify it so easily. As far as I'm concerned, this is a movie about humanity.

It's an oblique film, so quiet that at times it seems barely more than a whisper. But don't mistake that for fragility. It boasts a hard, clear voice.

M's past... is almost an irrelevance, for Kaurismäki's film is really concerned with the possibility of wiping the slate clean and replacing globalised, corporate living with the values of a utopian community of barter and free association.

A wistful, romantic concoction served straight-up, with no chaser to brace you against the strong kick of reality. . . . unforgettable.

The cavalier attitude of the movie seems utterly unconcerned with whether or not the audience picks up on any of the jokes, all of which are delivered with an unaffected, deadpan style.
