However, in THE MARS CANON, the unexpected, subtle, tender triad that forms between Kinuko (Makiko Kuno), Kohei (Fumiyo Kohinata), and Hijiri (Mami Nakamura) is realistic and undramatic. With slow-moving photography that often takes a bird's eye vantage point and holds it for a long, steady, silent moment, the film's style and feeling seems to visually portray the way that Kinuko feels inside. The somber mood of the film is Kinuko. A 29-year-old woman who works as a clerk in a small shop in Tokyo and longs for true love, she is overcome with loneliness. Her affair with Kohei, a 43-year-old executive who has a wife and daughter, only exacerbates her feelings of helpless aloneness. Kinuko's friend Hijiri is also in her 20s, a bohemian who listens to Indian music, cooks, and makes beaded necklaces. Each time Kinuko is hurt by Kohei, Hijiri comforts her and tells her to leave him. Soon enough, it becomes clear that Hijiri and Kohei are competing for Kinuko's affections. From there, the contest begins between the suave seductions of infidel Kohei, and the committed adoration of sweet Hijiri. [More]

Reviews for The Mars Canon
The material is that of any generic love triangle movie except buffed with an art film sheen.
