Critic Review - Miami Herald

The Avengers has a knockout final 30 minutes, all gee-whiz crash and bang and eye candy that makes grand use of 3D and IMAX and all the other toys. But the Transformers movies did that, too.

Even though I disagree with this reviewer, he's at least being honest. Obviously not everyone is going to have the same opinion of the film, but what's different with this guy is that his criticisms seem to be sincere, unlike some of the other rotten reviews which seem like contrarianism.

he starts off by basically calling the premise "unwatchable"...and Whedon a "miracle-man" if he can change his mind...that doesn't seem real sincere...when you are going in thinking I'm only going to like this if by some miracle lol

Yeah, this review doesn't seem like an attention seeking ploy like the others.

Transformers didn't have a brilliant script, a hilarious sense of humour, and amazing actors like Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson or Gwyneth Paltrow. Go crawl to the hole you come from.

Either did The Avengers. The script had no character development. I know what people are going to tell me. We already had that in the other films. But this is it's own stand alone film and it shouldn't get special treatment. This was not funny. Clearly it's humor for our nation's lowest common denominator. As for the acting, not that great. The characters didn't connect with me and I didn't care if they won or lost. As for the plot it was weak.

What lowbrow humor are you referring to? Why was the acting not that great to you? Why was the plot weak? If you're going to say these things about the movie, you need to elaborate more.

As for character development, you clearly missed the part where Iron Man almost sacrificed himself for the world. Earlier in the movie, Captain America told Stark that he only truly cared for himself and would not make sacrifices. One there was a great loss, Stark was clearly affected by it and understood that he is human, just like everyone else.

Character development. Right there.

Pretty sure the hulk burped in Iron Man's face at some point and the audience erupted in laughter.. pretty much LCD. Or even the "I will not be bullied" bit was modernized slapstick humor and that was about as "witty" as it got.

In regards to character development, one character out of six taking two hours to have one spectacular change of heart(APPARENTLY ITS NOT HARD TO WRITE A MOVIE SCRIPT WHERE EVENTS ARE FORCED) hardly constitutes greatness.

This being said, I did not dislike the movie. I enjoyed it to a degree but about ten minutes in I kind of had a road map plotted out and about an hour in I started to realize how long this movie was really going to be. Then when they started the transformers 3 end scene I pretty much stopped thinking altogether so that I could enjoy it.

Yes it did, you just blind as hell dude. It's sad that you're limited mental capacities can't see the differences between a superior film (The Avengers) and an inferior film (Transformers). I saw a strong script and i saw strong character development, and it was funny as hell, but you're probally one of those dead asses that never laughs at anything anyway.

If you think Hawkeye didn't run out of arrows then you missed when he ran out of arrows.

If you think the reviewer said that Hawkeye never ran out of arrows, then you missed (or misread) the part where he said only that it took him "inordinately long" to do so.

Like most of the rest of you I don't like watching the Fresh percentage drop for Avengers however I never believed for a second it would make it past this Friday morning's avalanche of new reviews without settling into the high 80s mid to low 90s. Superhero films aren't usually built to please critics. Especially ones that are fueled by the kind of fun factor that Avengers is shooting for. TDK wasn't the same kind of experience that Iron man was and Avengers simply can't compete with TDKR in terms of dark, brooding dramas that seem to please most critics.
At the end of the day everyone is entitled to their opinion and I thought Mr. Rodriguez's review was professional, well crafted and honest.

I think you're honest.

I think you have a good point. At least in Theory

I respect you, as a critic and as a person.

But you're wrong, and you should be punched in the ball sack for comparing this to Transformers. Jk, Jk lol.

Why has The Avengers elicited such rabid, near-unanimous pre-release love from critics and audiences? Because they liked it, pretty simple.

I don't agree with you, so your opinion is invalid. This gives me the right to berate you and threaten you with violence. Also, your opinion lowered the Sacred Tomato Number that I use to validate my devotion to this particular entertainment franchise, which is why I publicly request your excommunication from this movie opinion website. Good day, sir.

You're right, almost all on *this* review. Bear in mind the reviewer seems to be walking on eggshells on this one, which may be because he is indeed a fan of the source material. I don't think this level of reverence should be required for respect in the comments section, though.
