If you're not much of a Marvel Comics person but just want to get an early start on your mindless summer moviegoing, well, I guess this picture is no stupider than anything else.
I can't comment on your thoughts of the film, since i've yet to see it. But as far as comic book films going away like you would like, you might as well get that out of your head, because they are not going anywhere, anytime soon. Like it or not, they are here to stay for a while.
May 2 - 04:06 AM
lol...yeh when the title of the review is asking when they'll end...why bother
May 2 - 02:49 PM
This guy's just one of those snobs that think just because a movie is based on a comic book and not some boring 200 year old novel, it's gonna be bad.
May 3 - 12:57 AM
snob cred intact.
May 2 - 04:07 AM
How's he a 'snob' if he agrees with the TomatoMeter 77% of the time?
May 2 - 04:10 AM
because half of the critics are 'snobs'
May 2 - 09:58 AM
I've seen it in Malaysia... have you really seen it?!?! I don't think so! It was brilliant! Whose opinion? Me plus billions of humans on this planet!
May 2 - 04:11 AM
I'm usually one to defend critics but in this case Andrew's review sounds like he was dragged into the theater and strapped down, forced to watch a film genre he has nothing but contempt for in the first place. I enjoy reading as many reviews as possible before making a choice to see a film however it isn't helpful when I detect an undercurrent of bias running through the commentary.
Truth be told if I were forced to watch "The Notebook" at the theater and somebody made me write a review I'm sure it would come off sounding like I was totally annoyed too.
May 2 - 04:18 AM
I totally agree. I haven't seen it yet either, but I can understand a fair negative review if there are coherent and tangible examples to cite your displeasure. This reviewer obviously bears enormous disdain for the genre in general, and wouldn't have liked it regardless. As an Art History major in college, the aggressively negative reviews I've read about The Avengers (for the most part) remind me of the pseudo-intellectual arguments against the emerging Pop-Art movement in the 1960's.
May 2 - 10:48 AM
As an art history major you should know better than to draw a link between pop art and the Avengers.
May 3 - 01:10 AM
Well said. Exactly that.
May 2 - 02:59 PM
Just because someone doesn't like a certain genre doesn't mean that all movies associated with it should be viewed as bad. I enjoyed the Notebook but I'm not too fond of that genre.
May 2 - 03:28 PM
He said that he liked Avengers more than Thor and IM2. Both are rated positive here.
May 2 - 04:26 AM
Pierre Angelo Casanova
Millions of us enjoyed it... If you didn't, then watch Green Lantern over and over again till you puke out!
Avengers = Rotten ; Green Lantern = Fresh huh?
May 2 - 05:00 AM
This is not a legitimate argument. Stop it.
May 2 - 10:27 AM
Oh it is a legitmate argument.
May 2 - 02:57 PM
It is a very legitimate argument.
everyone is allowed an opinion, and Green Latern is worse than ball sweat
May 2 - 03:22 PM
everyone is allowed an opinion, and Green Lantern is worse than ball sweat

May 2 - 07:58 PM
Why are you talking it so personally? He's not attacking you, it's just his opinion.
Aug 22 - 09:02 PM
mindless summer moviegoing??? Hurry down to see "Dark Shadows!" I'm sure tehre will be lots of seats!!
May 2 - 06:04 AM
I saw the movie the other night, and agree with what one other critic said - it's basically the perfect superhero movie.
That is; it's loud, it's fun, it's busy, it's hilarious, it's a bit cheesy, there's a giant fight scene in the end, not a huge deep and meaningful reason for anything happening, you care quite a bit about all the characters and you're on the edge of your seat even though you know exactly how it is all going to end. In that respect, I think it's a true homage to the essence of what makes a comic book awesome.
But having said that, nothing really different happens. So if you're a bit of an idiot, or you don't like movies like that in general, I can see how someone can come to this conclusion.
Even though it's a bit sad.
Coz this movie is basically the coolest thing I have ever seen.
May 2 - 06:07 AM
how is it stupid? yes, it's mindless fun at times, but the dialogue is witty, the characters are interesting and have a purpose. Everything seems earned. How is it stupid?
May 2 - 06:18 AM
Men in suits fighting a giant worm, thats pretty much stupidity...
May 2 - 08:05 PM
Uh Ralph, its a movie based on a comic book...DUH!!!
May 4 - 09:31 AM
uber snob cred. Go back watch british films about people arraigning match sticks. How can you be objective when you hate the genre to start with?
May 2 - 06:22 AM
Nice Eddie Izzard reference there...but seriously, every british person I know (I am yet to see the film) enjoyed it...please don't make the mistake of thinking he represents the views of britain just because he's one british critic.
May 2 - 06:38 AM
Given that Andrew O'Hehir isn't British, it would be very eccentric indeed to view his comments as representative of that nation.
May 2 - 07:04 AM
worthless movie critic. the movie had me smiling from ear to ear the whole 2 and half hours. I go to the movies for fun. This was FUN! Best comic book movie I've seen. Go watch some indie arthouse crap movie nobody cares about.
May 2 - 06:58 AM
he's allowed to have an opinion, and your opinion is rubbish... that's my opinion
This is the first "surprise" rotten, because he seems to be very liberal with the freshes, even with comic book films. Not like the Village Voice lady, who everyone knew was going to give it a rotten from the get go.
May 2 - 07:32 AM
I don't understand the gay reference about Robert Downey's shtick.
Is being a smart-ass now also a sign of being homosexual?
I think this critic has too much grease in the game, if you will.
Also, why the naked hatred of people that read comic books?
And no mention for the Nolan Batman?
This guy clearly has an ax to grind but it remains beyond my ability to identify it clearly.
Was he picked on by the comic nerds in school?
Is that why he became what he has become?
May 2 - 07:46 AM
I think that apart from being a Hypocrite this reviewer is obviously a homophobe, either that or he's so deep in the closet that he's in Narnia. Whether Robert Downey Jr. is gay or not has nothing to do with the movie. He obviously just likes hating on people who are better than him because of an inferiority complex. Plus just because a book is illustrated or meant towards a younger audience doesn't mean it can't be looked at or examined in a serious light. He is refusing to give an objectified review based solely on the nature of the work.
May 4 - 01:11 PM
If you're not not much of a Marvel Comics person but just want to get an early start on reading biased reviews by people who weren't gonna like the movie in the first place, this review is about as stupid as they come.
May 2 - 08:02 AM
May 2 - 08:03 AM
I haven't seen the Avengers yet, as I am a mere mortal who rarely has the ability to see movies before they are released, so I can not say if this movie will be good or bad. Correct that; if I will like the movie or not. To be honest I have been sick of super hero movies since Iron Man 2, and I derive a sick sort of satisfaction from seeing that the Avengers is no longer at 100% from top critics. But what does it matter? you all will see it anyway and declare it awesome. WHAT DO YOU CARE if some twat doesn't agree with your OPINION.
The critic almost seems like he was just about ready to hate this movie before going into the theater. I will say that I'm glad that he was able to recognize Bruce Banner's weight in this movie. His character is so wonderfully made that he actually becomes the best part of the movie for me, and I've never even been a fan of the Hulk to begin with. Regardless of this review giving a rotten, I get the feeling from the review that it's not really a terrible movie, but just a movie that he doesn't like. I'm baffled, however, about this movie getting a rotten, yet Green Lantern gets a positive. How the hell does that work? lol

May 2 - 08:27 AM
This guy gave The Hunger Games a rotten review, but gave Breaking Dawn part 1 a Fresh review.
.....yeah...he has lost all credibility with me.
May 2 - 08:29 AM
Pretty much. Giving any Twilight movie a good review is bad enough, but to follow it up by giving bad reviews to Hunger Games and Avengers is basically killing your chances of anyone taking you seriously as a critic.
May 2 - 02:00 PM
Colin T. Coyote
I actually hated The Hunger Games.
May 2 - 02:06 PM
I actually hated Hunger Games (is my reviewer credibility trashed?), but... I'm not really going to trust the opinion of someone who gives Breaking Dawn pt. 1 a positive review and Inception a HIGHLY negative review.
May 2 - 02:16 PM
Seems to me this review should be fresh! He says this film is great and enjoyable and his issue isn't with this film! So it getsa rotten review because he has an issue with the genre and its predictable endings!
