Nothing but 2:20 of special effects and ridiculous fights...it's like all the superheroes are trying out at the Improv to see who can give the best one-liner, and none of them do.
You are a IDIOT
May 6 - 10:18 PM
Are you just trying to knock this movie you incompetent ass. There are so many super heroes in this movie that they should give the script writer and award for making sure they all had a sufficient amount of dialog. Your no better then the guy who knocked down Toystory 3 just to be different. Go write in the obituaries R-tard
May 6 - 10:34 PM
Perhaps you didn't realize you were going to see a comic book movie? Were you perhaps hoping someone would say, "I'm Batman"?
This story was never billed as a drama. It was billed as an action/comedy. According to your own words, the movie delivered on its promise in spades. Calling the action "ridiculous" is sort of like saying it was like...a comic book. In other words, Awesome.
What you did is comparable of going to see a production of Macbeth and giving it a negative review because it wasn't romantic enough.
Perhaps you are unable to appreciate it. If so, then you have failed in your job as a movie reviewer. You are supposed to give people on objective perspective of what they can expect. If you had written that it's a great action movie, but short on plot or tension you would have been within reason. Calling it excruciating to watch calls your credibility into question.
May 6 - 10:37 PM
This entire article was basically a movie review equivalent of hate speech; none of his observations had any real logical basis, and almost everything he said was either ignorant or hateful.
Hell, if we want to talk about credibility, let's talk about why his website looks like something done up in Paint and the text done in Notepad! LOL
May 7 - 01:00 AM
You are a fucking idiot. After reading the full review, that became painfully obvious. If you haven't seen the other films that provide backstory for the characters involved here, you should probably not see this. Still, even without the previous movies, this is a masterpiece. It's a great action movie with great characters and a good bit of humor. Whedon is the first director I've seen follow a multiple-character battle correctly; the battle in the streets toward the end flew seamlessly from one character to another and didn't spend too much time (or too little) on any of them. Action movies are made of explosions and one-liners, and it's a great break to see a movie that isn't absorbed by either. I loved this movie, and I struggle to see how you could hate it, or how you even got a job as a reviewer in the first place. Get your head out of your self-absorbed ass and try having a little fun.
May 6 - 10:49 PM
... Said the saddest, most cynical person in the world.
May 6 - 11:03 PM
Please stop reviewing movies and kill yourself
May 7 - 12:31 AM
Tony, please don't mind the comments written by all these imbeciles who enter this site to state their idiotic opinions. Remember... the American movie viewer has an IQ lower than the temperature in Nebraska during winter.
I absolutely loved your keen review. You scored on every point you tried to make about this super production, which is by and large a piece of crap, except for the special effects, just like you so rightfully noticed.
May 7 - 12:32 AM
"the American movie viewer has an IQ lower than the temperature in Nebraska during winter."
Comic-book geeks by and large have a far superior IQ than the average Joe, and we are secure enough in our intelligence to not be insulted by your smart-assed remarks. We've been putting up with bullies like you all our lives. Besides, I can tell by your photo that you're old, so I'll be nice to you because you'll be dead soon.
May 7 - 12:45 AM
Tell me you didn't have a premature ejaculation when you wrote that... "geek"
May 7 - 01:23 AM
Clearly you have proven your superior maturity here, Dan. That wasn't a totally unnecessary thing to say at all.
May 7 - 03:33 AM
Hahaha! Dan you're the man....
May 7 - 12:06 PM
LOL Dan ure my man. Great! :-D
May 8 - 12:52 AM
Wow. You're going to say that to him? This proves that you're too much of a die-hard fan...you'd even celebrate someone's death if they criticized your beloved Avengers. Take it easy. YOU really are a fanboy. And respect your elders you ignorant kid.
May 7 - 12:04 PM
...Elders who say that his fellow countrymen have lower IQ's than those of inanimate concepts? Yeah, no thanks. I'd rather just ignore whatever "sense" he's made and just go for the jugular too. How about you stop fighting a losing battle and go back to your anti-logic rallies?
May 7 - 05:12 PM
Well said Cameron. Its ridiculous, these die-hard fanboys want someone to die simply due to his different opinion. lol I couldnt think of anything proving more clearly how incredibly stupid they actually are. Tony was right all along..
May 8 - 12:56 AM
Guys like you really need to be kept off the computer. You know, big budget doesn't always mean big piece of crap. Oh and FYI: Cynicism is not synonymous with making keen observations, you quack!
You're probably too old to even understand what this means, but you are what normal people call a "troll." Get off the internet, troll. Just. Leave.
One more thing: you don't come off as intelligent or superior by insulting people's intelligence with big words and snide comments. This is why people like you never gain any recognition; you're too much of a d*** contrarian to like what normal people like!
May 7 - 12:49 AM
Thank you Dan! I thought I were the only comic fan with a functional, critical mind.. lol
May 7 - 01:02 AM
"The American movie viewer has an IQ lower than the temperature in Nebraska during winter"
Site your source, good sir.
May 7 - 08:50 AM
99 percent of the replies here, clearly support that statement haha
May 8 - 12:58 AM
He's monologging! Quick Hulk - Treat him like Loki!
May 7 - 12:37 AM
LOL. Kudos, sir!
WHAMMM! THRUMMMM! SLAM!
May 7 - 02:24 PM
I'm sorry that this movie isn't some artsy-fartsy bulls***, you weird-a** hipsters call 'art!' I'm sorry that this film transcends far beyond anything you could even DREAM of making. I'm sorry that you are a cynical a**hole who can't just understand when something is just THAT GOOD. Keep writing those sh***y reviews in your basement for that nobody-a** newspaper, buddy... That's as far as you're ever going to get.
By the way, before you decide to slander the name of probably one of the greatest action epics of all time, you should man the f*** up and keep the e-mail link open on your website! It's not fair to others that they have to suffer this frankly, insufferable, slanderous, over-envious piece of garbage you call a review while you restrict the right for them to tell you what they think of your "work." You are a spineless, cynical coward, sir, and I wish there was some way to revoke your right to free speech that you so heinously abused.
May 7 - 12:44 AM
The villain had a non action oriented conversation with each one of the heroes one at a time as the movie went on. In fact the first hour of the movie we seen very little action at all.
I love Marvel Comics, I love most of the movies but Mr Medley is spot-on. This one is probably one of the weakest despite its terrific cast and really amazing special effects. And thats probably where the problem lies: too much focus on SFX and too less focus on story and depth. There is no tension whatsoever because all the super heroes are totally invulnarable. Even the human ones, like Natasha or Hawkeye fight armies of elite alien cyborg warriors from another world, that have supposedly conquered entire civilizations much more advanced than ours, and just kill them like flies not taking any damage whatsoever, while delivering ridiculous lines. Its wildly laughable!!! The SFX are mind bending for sure but totally pointless without any deep story that makes you care for the characters and for what goes on. Movies like Thor, Spider Man or the 2006 Hulk are incredibly better.
May 7 - 12:57 AM
Realism? This is not what comic books are supposed to be about. Thus, we could correctly expect a comic book movie to be roughly the same. The reason why Mr. Whedon put a little more emphasis on the character development, writing, special effects, and action rather than on developing incredibly deep storylines is because of one very important reason. He Did NoT need TO. There has already been an impressive lineup of movies chock full of incredibly deep story for the majority of these characters. This movie is an intersection of these storylines, a culmination, a climax of energy all put into one place. The metaphorical train tracks of the story have already been laid out. The writing was just deep enough, just humorous enough to be perfect. Any deeper and he would have thrown us all out of the momentum of the action and into a FREAKIN coma.
May 7 - 01:28 AM
Every movie needs to stand on it's own, at least to some extent. Sure, you can say that all of the movies leading up to Avengers had enough depth to hold everyone over! But that's no excuse at all.
If they rebooted Batman, Superman succeeded, rebooted GL, adapted WW and Flash...and made great movies, I'd be ecstatic. But if they made a JLA movie after all of those and just threw them all together and had incessant fights one after another...I'd be really sad. And that's how I felt with this movie.
You can't just take out the meaning of the story because you think the action, comedy, and amazing cast make up for it.
May 7 - 12:11 PM
Alvin Lloyd Allipin
The whole point of The Avengers is to put these different people together. You're asking for more depth while taking out all the fun aspect, which is not really good. X-Men was different because they are ALL mutants. You have to thank Bryan Singer for the first 2 X-Men films but you're a total TROLL if you love X-Men 3 and even X-Men Origins: Wolverine (which they fucked up DEADPOOL).
Christopher Nolan is an amazing writer, but his writing style won't work on something like The Avengers. Realism and edginess doesn't even fit at all either. So like I said, it's more like a 50/50 chance. And now we get Man of Steel with Nolan and Goyer as writers and producers. They said that it will be as edgy as The Dark Knight but let's hope that they will never fuck up Superman as an angsty guy like Batman; Superman is all about HOPE.
COME ON. You have to think properly. Even Batman Begins was Nolan's worst Batman film and one of its purposes is to take out bad taste of 'Batman and Robin' in our mouths. What I'm saying is that Joss Whedon loves and knows comics so The Avengers is more like an 'origin story' so maybe the next Avengers film will have depth. Better not to be like Iron Man 2 because it's an average film despite of its depth.
May 7 - 06:55 PM
May 8 - 12:51 AM
Sorry, but you lost credibility because you're also a TROLL, just like Tony Medley.
There was no need for development, or as much because everyone was already established from previous films. Oh, you love Marvel Comics but you hate Joss Whedon, who is a comic book guy. His run on Astonishing X-Men is brilliant.
The Avengers is like bringing a comic book to life. TDK never did that since it was very different.
May 7 - 09:22 AM
Stop calling everybody a troll just because they criticize the film...
May 7 - 12:09 PM
...states the Lord of Trolls himself. The more you post, Cameron, the more you seem to hate this movie. Interesting.
May 7 - 02:28 PM
Seriously Cam...Everyone sees right through your bias. And to show you, I'm going to give you the amount of action in minutes of the first hour and 7 minutes of each film. Dark Knight opens up immediately into action(bank heist) until 6 minutes 16 seconds...dialogue until the scarecrow scene at 8 minutes ten seconds lasts till 10 minutes 17 seconds. A few scenes in between have action but since they don't last long and are pushed by dialogue I will leave them out (I will keep them in for avengers) So at 34 minutes batman goes to get Lau from china this lasts till 37 minutes 30 seconds...The action starts up again at 46 minutes 20 seconds when they find out the joker is targeting the police chief, Judge Cirilo, and Harvey Dent. With intermittent dialogue it is still action driven till 53 minutes 5 seconds...Then at about an hour in Bruce gets on his motorcycle, finds the police men tied up, the fake shooting of commissioner Gordon, and Harvey dent kidnapping Thomas Sheff....ends at 1 hour 7 minutes for a grand total of 26 minutes of action in the first hour and 7 minutes (and I was lenient)
Now for the Avengers. Starts off with dialogue till loki is brought through the portal at 4 minutes 48 seconds...but there is no fighting until 5 minutes 7 seconds...stops at 5 minutes 23 seconds...Dialogue until 7 minutes 56 seconds where the chase begins and ends at 10 minutes 30 seconds. The interogation scene with widow starts at 11 minutes 32 seconds but there is no fighting until 13 minutes 50 seconds and ends at 14 minutes 25 seconds. At 22 minutes 50 seconds iron man is flying after finishing stark tower. He stops flying at 23 minutes 39 seconds. At 32 minutes 38 seconds the hovercraft starts to take off an is completely invisible by 34 minutes 16 seconds. Even though you only see brief shots of it in the air before they zoom back to dialogue in the cockpit you have to assume it's still action so I counted it. At 38 minutes loki starts attacking in Germany but stops at 39 minutes 23 seconds for an important speech while one german won't kneel. The action kicks up again at 40 minutes 33 seconds when captain arrives and ends at 42 min when loki gives up. At 43 minutes thor boards the plane, attacks iron man and takes his brother, and iron man and captain follow until 44 minutes. At 44 mins it's dialogue with loki and thor until 46 minutes 8 seconds when iron man tackles thor and the fight ensues. Fight stops at 49 minutes and there is absolutely no action until an hour and 8 minutes into the film. So a grand total of only 11 minutes 22 seconds of action in the first hour and 8 minutes of the Avengers (and I was strict) Once again the tally is:
Dark Knight 26 minutes of action in the first hour and 7 minuted VS. the Avengers Clocking in at a WHOPPING 11 minutes 22 seconds of action in the first hour and 8 minutes...I mean unless you want me to count Captain America and the punching bag...Okay fine 13 minutes 7 seconds of action for the Avengers. So suck on that shit Tony, Cam, and all the rest of you trolls!!! 200.3 million dicks in your mouth...BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! *sigh* I really need to rethink my life.
May 9 - 05:45 PM
I dont get it, so everyone who criticizes this flick is a troll yeah? And no, I dont hate Joss Whedon, why would I? I just dont think that he made such a terrific movie. And I dont hate any of these fanboys, why would I? I´m not 12 anymore. I just find it really amusing how people start getting all angry just because someone dislikes their favorite movie. Ridiculous...
May 8 - 01:07 AM
Yeah right and those who hailed The Dark Knight as the best superhero film ever are not ridiculous at all. Come on, not all superhero films should be gritty all the time.
Making Nolan's Batman films as the standard of comic book movies is... RIDICULOUS. Hypocritical as much?
May 8 - 06:06 AM
People complain about no character development yet we see Stark learn from Rogers what it means to be a hero. We see Rogers go beyond his patriotic trust of the government, we also see Hulk learn team work and Banner learn that some people might accept him.
The Avengers was always going to be about the character dynamics as that is the point of an ensemble flick. The plot simply gives the movie a purpose and direction, making all these characters balanced and interesting while be true to their characters is a major achievement. Anyone who is truly a fan would know this :-)
May 8 - 04:37 PM
I think the replies you post are the most logical and I agree with you on all counts :)
May 10 - 01:53 AM
Hahaha no one should ever take this guy seriously with the website that looks like it was made in 1991, the completely un-thorough, sloppily written review(completely ignoring the complexity of the backstories and multiple sub-plots that are woven through the movie), and condensing the entire thing down to the most ridiculous generalization I've ever seen(war of the worlds? Really?) Professional reviewers are supposed to be aware of important details..you know, like the correct name of the director? Geez.
May 7 - 01:19 AM
Medley has valid points, but he missed the whole point of this movie. You're in it to be awed and entertained - Not to analyze the plot for an academy award.
May 7 - 01:43 AM
This might be the worst review I've ever seen for a movie. Kill yourself.
May 7 - 02:37 AM
"They can fall from great heights (thousands of feet) and can still jump up to continue the fight. Only in Hollywood and comic books." Well duh
May 7 - 04:44 AM
Seeing as how this movie is the love child of the two, I think it makes it extra plausible, don't you? :3
May 7 - 08:57 AM
This review is terrible. Barely any coherent arguments at all.
"Since there's virtually no story except aliens attacking the earth, there's little requirement for acting." First of all, there was loads of story events (did he even see the middle of this film?). Second of all, if there's MORE plot than the acting requirement is LOWER, not higher! Less plot means more standing around and talking thus putting more pressure on the actors.
"Loki starts out to be totally indestructible." No he doesn't, he's just better than those he encountered early on. His character was consistent with how he was in Thor, as well.
"They can fall from great heights (thousands of feet) and can still jump up to continue the fight." No crap. That's what makes them "super" heroes!
"Josh Whedon makes it too light-hearted and comedic for there to be any tension at all." This just isn't the case at all! The collapsing airship was extremely stressful and serious. Also, the final battle showed the heroes stretched to their limits! Sure there were comedic lines, but they wouldn't have been funny if the environment wasn't stressful.
Paragraph 6 just has this mess of a run-on sentence (sentence 2).
"War of the Worlds (1953 and 2005), for instance, had the same basic plot, but were not comedies." This sentence starts our singular and ends up plural. Did this guy not learn grammar? He should have said: "Both of the War of the Worlds films..."
May 7 - 05:11 AM
He's right. Good man
May 7 - 06:03 AM
your not a blogger your not even critic, your Review is just negative, is there something wrong with you. just a evil man just loving all the hate you started.
May 7 - 06:42 AM
Same old fishing for hits that you see with every poplar, well-reviewed movies. This guy and Armond White should get together.
May 7 - 06:56 AM
your website sucks, your comment is idiotic and you're NOT even a top critic!! so i'm just gonna ignore you!!! obviously you don't have a great childhood memories about superheroes like we do...
May 7 - 07:01 AM
