Box Office Guru Wrapup: Avengers Crushes Records with $200M Opening

Summary

North American audiences got a big taste of what international movie fans have already been enjoying as the super hero value pack The Avengers smashed the all-time opening weekend record kickstarting the summer blockbuster season in an unbelievable manner. Marketed and distributed by Disney, the PG-13 film grossed a jaw-dropping $200.3M over the Friday-to-Sunday period obliterating the previous record of $169.2M set last July by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 surpassing it by more than $30M. Both films were helped by 3D and IMAX runs. Playing in 4,349 locations, the per-theater average was a scorching $46,063. Back to Article

I really wanted to read this, but the poor punctuation (or almost complete lack-there-of) was too distracting. Somebody please introduce this writer to commas.

The Avengers has already passed the worldwide gross of the Hunger Games and will cruise past it domestically in about another week or even this weekend. The Avengers is going to become an iconic film and it will be nominated for some Oscars, mark my words.

As far as 'Avatar', that's probally a little too far out of reach in my opinion. But "Hunger Games", come on, that's not a good berometer to judge 'Avengers' by buddy, it's already pass that film by more than 100 million.

I'm pretty much in awe after seeing this movie last night. I just can't believe the characters were balanced out so well. Also, this film might very well boast the best visual effects I have ever seen! It was just fantastiic all around!

The Avengers was awesome and it deserves the records that it is setting. I look forward to seeing TDKR and TASM, but the pressure is on them to step up their marketing. TDKR is going to make crazy money, but will it make Avengers money remains to be seen and my guess is that it will not.

The hype for the Avengers was strictly based on the previous films and comics, and they cashed in by the film being so darn good. Word of mouth from overseas and critics got this film to $207 mil and it will continue to make big money. People bring up the competition, but some of you fail to realize that The Avengers can build off of the other films being released.

It does not have to beat Dark Shadows and Battleship (even though it will), it just needs to keep making millions of dollars and that it does not decline significantly. MIB 3 is coming out May 25 and will open big, but don't be surprised if The Avengers takes back the top spot a week later. Seriously, the repeat business of this film is off the charts and that will be the reason for how well it does down the road.

By the way, both TDKR and TASM will be released in July, who is going to rule june? My guess will be the The Avengers still making good money.

You're right, if this film shows legs which i think it will, 600+ million domestically and 2 billion globally become strong possibilities in my opinion.

I haven't seen it yet, will be checking it out soon. It would freakin sweet if it was the first movie to have two consecutive weekends in which it made over a hundred million dollars in box office receipts. Still will not beat Avatar in the end.

I agree with you on both points, "The Avengers" will be the first film to post consecutive 100+ million dollar weekends. With that being said, i just don't see it reaching "Avatar's" 760 million domestic total. However, depending on it's legs, i don't think 600 million domestically is out the realm of possibility.

I am hoping and praying that TASM has a post credit scene with Nick Fury.

I know it's a lot to hope for, seeing as how Marvel studios don't have Webhead's rights and all, but damn that would be sweet.
