Box Office Guru Wrapup: Avengers Crushes Records with $200M Opening

Summary

North American audiences got a big taste of what international movie fans have already been enjoying as the super hero value pack The Avengers smashed the all-time opening weekend record kickstarting the summer blockbuster season in an unbelievable manner. Marketed and distributed by Disney, the PG-13 film grossed a jaw-dropping $200.3M over the Friday-to-Sunday period obliterating the previous record of $169.2M set last July by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 surpassing it by more than $30M. Both films were helped by 3D and IMAX runs. Playing in 4,349 locations, the per-theater average was a scorching $46,063. Back to Article

This opened $15M more than overseas. It's as if Americans were saying "Premiere another one like this out of the States again, and we'll have your balls for second breakfast, Marvel! And we know you got 'em cuz we gave 'em to ya! SEE???"

Ain't going to change a thing man. Americans aren't going to stop seeing movies just because they premier early overseas. The studios know that. This movie proves it.

Go see the 3-D. I have a 3-D Tv at home, vizio passive 42 inch and go to 3-D films usually. The only ones that are remotely good are those pixar computer generated films. This Avengers is the best 3-D I've seen, litterally the real 3D is what I did and it comes out of the screen at you even if he tosses a coffee mug to the trash. Amazingly well done. I won't bother recommending the movie. You'd have to be under a rock to not know how amazing this film turned out. It's our generations' Star Wars. Can't wait to watch the trilogy unfold!

I think "The Avengers" hits between 105-120 million this weekend. It's already hit 50 million through the weekday and it should end up with about 63-65 million mon-thu which is very strong, and even more impressive when you consider it's May when kids are still in school.

Though i don't think "The Avengers" will threaten "Avatar's" box office record by no means, it could hit 1 billion by sunday which would make it only 18 days it took the film to reach that plataeu. I believe "Avatar" currently holds the speed record of only 19 days it took to reach 1 billion. Though i believe "Avatar's" domestic and global numbers are safe, this could set "Avengers" up for an interesting possibility. If it's at 370-380 million domestically and over 1 billion globally by sunday, 600+ million domestically & 2 billion globally would seem to be within possible reach in my opinion.
