In what world would Batman from 1989 be #48 on a list like this?

Really??? The new dark knight beat out the first spiderman? I'll take a classic over a muscle blockbuster any day of the week.

The dark knight is the greatest comic book movie of all time and it isn't even close

I believe he was refering to the Dark Knight Rises, but Spider-man is definitely a "muscle Blockbuster" too... And The Avengers is right up there with The Dark Knight.

I believe that title goes to The Avengers my friend, but nice guess. :)

To each his own. I found both to be great in their own way, but if I had to choose I'd go with The Dark Knight. It's the kind of film that really benefits from repeat viewing, plus as much as I loved Loki, Heath Ledger gives arguably the greatest performance ever for a comic book villain.

The Dark Knight is a masterpiece, while the Avengers is a summer movie for 12 year-olds.

I was referring to the dark knight rises. But spiderman is more of a classic blockbuster in the sense that it used didn't need to shock and awe as much with explosions and over-the-top action sequences.

I have to admit, I am beyond glad that RT finally didn't put something with a lower rating above The Dark Knight to avoid being "typical." Could this finally be the end of the lame trend of people trying to be "edgy" by siding with good-but-not-great blockbusters (namely the Burton adaptations) over the Batman adaptation in a league of its own?

(Still, I'll never understand RT's score tampering "formula" for ranking films.)

They are going by the average rating out of 10 not the tomato meter. So if the average critic rating for Movie 1 was 8/10 and the average for movie 2 was 7.5/10 yet Movie 2 was at a 95% and Movie 1 was at a 87%, Movie 1 would take the #1 spot.

Apr 16 - 08:39 PM

Observation 99

Observation 99

Are you sure? I considered that before, but from old lists to here, we have stuff like Superman Returns over Oldboy, when Oldboy beats it in both categories.

They've already shown us their complex "formula" (some math equation that takes the number of reviews, etc. into account) and the score out of ten wasn't on there. I just think they have a problem with the fact that that would make too much sense.

If I had to choose between watching Flash Gordon or Thor ten times in a row, I would pick Flash in a landslide. You might be able to argue Thor is better, but there is no question of which is more fun.

I'd like to see X-men and X-Men 2 a little higher on the list they are fantastic movies and should be the flag bearers for the X-Men over First Class...that being said First Class was very good.

Wow such a terrible list. Barbarella, Red, wanted, over the hedge, The 70's Batman Addams family values, WTF? Ninja scroll number 20 , Watchmen in top 5. I'll stop there

Apr 15 - 10:32 PM

King S.

King Simba

Watchmen isn't even in the top 50.

Also, personally I thought all the films you mentioned (excluding Barbarella and Ninja Scroll as I haven't seen these) were pretty entertaining if not exactly great films. The 1966 Batman movie in particular is one of the funniest comic book movies ever, with endlessly quotable dialogue. It was everything Batman Forever and Batman and Robin tried and failed to be.

Apr 16 - 03:59 AM

Watchmen was very polarizing with critics so you will never see it on an RT list. I myself found it better than 90% of the movies on the list though.

Even before I checked the list I knew it wasn't going to please a lot of people. Let's face it, there's always going to be a lot of unfairness when comparing films with barely more than 20 reviews to those with more than 200 reviews (and of course just because a film got a really high tomatometer score doesn't mean critics thought it was great, just that most of them liked it), plus everyone will have his/her own personal top 50 list, but overall nearly all of the choices here are pretty solid even if I find the ranking to be way off in some cases (Batman Begins at number 15? Personally, I don't think there's ever been a comic or graphic novel adaptation that's as well made in every regard as Batman Begins. Everytime I watch it, I enjoy it more. I'd rank it only second to its sequel. Superman 2 I think is a little too high, but then again it did admittedly set the standard for how to make a worthy comic book adaptation followup, while V for Vendetta is ranked way too low in my opinion).

However, they couldn't have picked a better choice for number 1 in my opinion. I also think the top five is really great if slightly different than how I'd do it.

I 100% believe that Spider-Man 2 is still the best Super-Hero film yet made. It is the perfect balance between The Dark Knight and The Avengers, also two of the best Comic-Book adaptations. I also feel that the original Spider-Man should be in the top ten, and Batman Begins is enormously superior to The Dark Knight Rises.

First Class was truly terrible. I have never seen a film that I so strongly disagreed with the consensus on and I wonder what exactly I'm missing. Terrible acting, laughable effects, overly long, and silly plot even by comic book standards. Perhaps the inclusion of darling Lawrence masked its obvious flaws for some, I dunno. Or maybe X3 provided such contrast that FC seemed like Lawrence of Arabia.

Those terrible reboot of Spiderman and Superman we're better than V for Vendetta? No way. Glad to see Dark Knight #1 where it belongs. Also very surprised to see how highly reviewed/ranked del Toro's Hellboy movies have been.

For me it be either Dark Knight or Spider-man 2 at number 1.

1. Spider-man 2/Dark Knight
2. Old Boy (Could be #1 as well)
3. Watchmen
4. Road to Perdition
5. Batman Begins/Dark Knight Rises/Spider-Man

Even though I like both, Iron Man and Avengers are probably rated too high. And First Class and Kick Ass do nothing for me.
