When there was so much potential for an intelligent story here the Wachowski Brothers have opted to spend most of their screen time on mindless action.

There's not much humor to keep it all life-size, and by the final stretch it's become bloated, mechanical, and tiresome.

Another slice of overlong, high concept hokum.

The least humane, least responsible, least pardonable movie I have ever seen.

Aimed specifically at a young, male audience, this challenging sci-fi adventure is big on visuals and short on story.

A blast of Holly-Kong glitz that never approaches the stylistic cohesiveness of, say, John Woo's Face/Off or the charisma of that film's propulsive star John Travolta.

Ultimately, The Matrix settles for technically dazzling comic-book shtick. Some might count this as a good thing, but I'm not a fan of the Wachowskis' more-is-more aesthetic.

The problem with The Matrix is that the enormously talented Wachowski brothers think their playful premise has metaphysical implications.

At least the Wachowski's attempted to do something different than what had been seen before, even if the finished product isn't quite the success they obviously yearned for.

The Matrix is to overblown silliness as Mount Rushmore is to big stone heads.

It's astonishing that so much money, talent, technical expertise and visual imagination can be put in the service of something so stupid.

The Matrix not only is a failure as a science-fiction movie -- long on explanation, short on inspiration -- but it doesn't do anything interesting with the futuristic vision that it takes forever to explain.

The Matrix is a movie experience like no other, and experience is what it's all about. It explodes with dazzling visuals and a transcendent sense of excitement.

Hollywood has finally successfully captured the Asian city's action-filmmaking style in a star named Keanu Reeves and writer-directors called the brothers Wachowski!
