Ted Bonnitt directs this affectionate look at the lives and careers of David Friedman and Dan Sonney, two central figures of schlock movies from the 1940s through the 1960s. The film opens with the two swapping amiable barbs at one another as they ride around in the backseat of a car winding through the streets of L.A., where they shot hundreds of no-budget brilliantly-weird exploitation flicks. Rather than a documentary, director Ted Bonnitt has fashioned a sort of 'This is Your Life, Dan and Dave!' testimonial.
A fun (albeit brief) documentary that will have you either gasping in amazement or laughing out loud . . .
Recommended if you're the type who actually watches all those Making Of features on DVDs, or maybe just interested in an interesting yarn to tell your mates down at the pub...
Anyone interested enough in these old geezers probably already knows enough about them to make the film redundant, and anyone not interested may not care enough to watch it.
An easy film to take on its own limited terms.
Cheery documentary on pioneer exploitation filmmakers.
A fun little film that documents the life of a couple of ... P. T. Barnums of the movies.
The chronology is haphazard, and facts about the exploitation business are delivered offhandedly and without context.
David Friedman & Dan Sonney are a couple of old grifters looking back at the con game that was the exploitation/ grindhouse movies of the 50's, 60's & 70's. A lot of fun.
