The Medallion is a "Golden Child" ripoff...but it is marginally better than "The Tuxedo" due to less reliance on special effects, a much more charismatic leading lady and an amusing sidekick in Evans (once director Gordon Chan finds his timing)
...feels like the return of good ol' cheesy, charismatic, pardonably haphazard Jackie Chan — even if he's finally begun accepting the ravages of age and injury, relying this time on wirework and CGI.
Feels like a mediocre Hong Kong movie lacking even the charm of misspelled subtitles or bad dubbing.
Far from his best, but it's fun.
The only moment worth looking at is one where Chan drowns while putting on a brave face. . . for its effectiveness as a pointed commentary on the artist at this point in his career.
Because the filmmakers often have so little to work with, The Medallion comes across as a mix tape of sparring sounds and various visual styles.
Speaking of cartoons, the whole movie is awfully similar to Chan's self-titled cartoon series, except with one major difference: the series is decent.
three-on-one bouts with Jackie’s flying limbs . . . have a rapturous vigor,[but] his final face-off in mid-air with Sands suffers from Sands' obvious lack of expertise
Sadly, The Medallion has the feel of an all-too-ordinary straight-to-DVD B-movie.
It's just too dopey for me to recommend.
