Bo Zenga Doing Monster Mash with Stan Helsing
And here we thought Van Helsing was funny enough as it is...
The masses have spoken, and according to Meet the Spartans' grosses, they apparently want more spoof movies -- something Bo Zenga is ready and willing to provide.
Variety reports that Zenga -- who wrote Soul Plane, appeared as "EMT" in 1994's Cagney & Lacey reunion movie, and acted as a producer on Scary Movie -- has set up a new film, to be titled Stan Helsing, at Stone Village Pictures. Zenga will write and direct the project, which Variety sums up below:
Action takes place on Halloween night, when a videostore clerk, Stan Helsing, must reluctantly save a town from the six most-feared monsters in cinematic history.
Zenga, who most recently served as a producer of 2006's Turistas, tells Variety:
"'Stan Helsing' spoofs the six biggest movie monster franchises of all time, which collectively have grossed over $1 billion worldwide. We expect to take a healthy bite of that number."

I stumbled upon the first few minutes of Epic Movie on HBO and it was unwatchable. Can't anyone make an Airplane/Naked Gun movie without the obvious movie "spoofs"? (Reply to this) |

on Feb 11 2008 10:46 AM You have to see the movie to understand, but essentially if you punch Wolfman in the crotch, it will still hurt him. There's nothing funnier when you're ten years old than that joke, at least in that movie. And McMurphy, to play off a little of what you're saying, would it work if it were more in the mold of a "Shaun of the Dead?" Maybe they're playing fast and loose with the word "spoof." At least here's hoping that one of the people that unleashed "Scary Movie" into the world and started the whole mess can help rein it in a little... (Reply to this) |

on Feb 12 2008 08:09 AM In reply to this comment (#1568355) Xavier. I was actually quoting Monster Squad and simultaneously you had the same line in mind. The quote is obviously still golden after 20 years! I agree with you that Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are much less obvious spoofs but still subtlely capture the obsurdity of certain movie cliches. I think the key to a successful "spoof" is keeping the same overall plot structure of the genre you're spoofing. I don't understand why the Scary Movie types feel that the film has to go from one scene to the next spoofing one movie after another. Some of them even throw in pop culture references of the time like Brittany Spears and celebrity couples. I think what film-goers like you and I need to understand is these kind of movies aren't geared toward us. I think the most frustrating part is how much money these films make and how many people actually anticipate seeing them. That's all that studios really care about. (Reply to this) |
