RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Megamind and Due Date

This week on home video, there's a solid mix of decent films, in both big-budget fare and independent cinema. We kick things off with the Tina Fey/Brad Pitt/Will Ferrell-powered animated 2010 film from Paramount and the Robert Downey Jr.-Zach Galifianakis buddy road trip comedy. Then there are a few highly acclaimed indies, including the winner of the Limited Release and Foreign Film categories of our Golden Tomato Awards, and to round things out, we've got another round of impressive Criterion Collection entries. But this week, we're also including a sentimental favorite of sorts. So have a look! More…

Box Office Guru Wrapup: Megamind Holds On To The Top Spot

This weekend Will Ferrell's cartoon creation Megamind enjoyed supreme rule over the North American box office for a second consecutive frame as the DreamWorks Animation hit grossed an estimated $30.1M to retain the number one spot. Dropping only 35%, the PG-rated 3D flick held up very well with paying audiences almost matching the 33% sophomore dip witnessed by the company's 2007 toon Bee Movie from this same weekend. That Jerry Seinfeld pic collected 57% of its $126.6M final in the first ten days. If Megamind follows the same November-December pattern, it should end up with over $150M domestically and certainly a ton more overseas. The blue villain also had a much smaller second weekend drop than Monsters vs. Aliens which fell 45% so the animation studio must be happy with the staying power. More…

Premiering in second place with strength was the R-rated comedy Due Date while the Tyler Perry film For Colored Girls enjoyed a sturdy debut of its own in third place. More…

Critics Consensus: Megamind Is Sometimes Super

This week at the movies, we've got a reformed supervillain (Megamind, with voice work from Will Ferrell and Tina Fey); a crazed cross-country trek (Due Date, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis); and some pained, poetic women (For Colored Girls, starring Thandie Newton and Janet Jackson). What do the critics have to say? Megamind, a tale of a washed-up superhero and an evil mastermind who sees the error of his ways, shares some cosmetic similarities with a couple of recent animated features - namely, The Incredibles and Despicable Me. Still, critics say Megamind has a strong voice cast, strong visuals, and a loopy sense of humor that help to make up for a slightly stale premise and some pacing problems. More…
