This is a style-heavy, action-laden, wise-crack loaded 98-minutes of pretty decent fun. Men in Black is silly, simplistic and lightweight, but only the most uptight of viewers will hate it.

Consensus: MIB has plenty of spectacle, but its clever script and charismatic leads are what carry the film. Its mixture of comedy and cool makes for a whole lot of fun.

Some 40 years later a founding father of the agency, Agent Kay (Tommy Lee Jones), finds himself with a new smart-mouthed partner fresh from the NYPD who is soon dubbed Agent Jay (Will Smith). Their first mission is to save the Earth from destruction by a giant insectlike alien (Vincent D'Onfrio) that, incidentally, drives an exterminator's truck. Armed with their matching Ray-Bans, skinny ties, and space-age weapons that Jay barely understands--he calls the Neuralyzer the "flashy thing"--the new duo begin another average day of fighting intergalactic terrorists. An amazingly hip and terribly clever movie that riffs on everything from E.T.--THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL to CASABLANCA, this Barry Sonnenfeld film is based on the equally savvy comic book by Lowell Cunningham. Reviews for Men In Black
Like the inky void of space, there's really not much here, but what there is, is certainly entertaining
...while every big movie has its gasp-inducing moments, this film concentrates on inventive and quirky.
Jones is dryly hilarious and Smith comically exuberant as the elite duo who are out to save the world.
Combines the talents of Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones and director Barry Sonnenfeld to hilarious, endearing effect.
...thanks to Solomon's sparkling dialogue, Sonnenfeld's graceful economy, and a steady visual inventiveness, Men in Black takes the radical step of assuming that its audience is hip and smart, and it shines with that generous act of complicity.
Men in Black continues this summer's tradition, already established by Con Air and Batman and Robin, of big-budget action pictures that at least have the wit to know how silly they are.
Though the story is pure cartoon, the movie is exceptionally smart and exceptionally well-paced.
The film never takes itself that seriously, but manages to deliver consistent, but never huge, laughs.
What is it about the black suit/black tie/white shirt get-up in movies?
Will Smith, the only spark of life in Independence Day, now is allowed to shine in brighter, smarter material.
Smarter, leaner, funnier, and more human than most entries in the genre, relying less on spectacle than on the chemistry of the two leads and the wit of the script for its appeal.
Helping, obviously, is a great cast, led by Jones, who actually gets some of the biggest laughs with his deadpan delivery.
There was never any doubt that Will Smith would be funny... What comes as a pleasant surprise is how funny Tommy Lee Jones is.
For once, the summer formula works like a charm: two superstars, a couple of quirky sidekicks, a slew of special effects, a mess o' smart-alecky remarks--yet there's still room for semi-believable characters and a sturdy story.
Forget the crappy music video, forget the Raybans commercial tie-ins, forget all the crappy hype that the studio felt compelled to spew forth, just go rent this film, stock up on popcorn and have a fun night.
Just a collection of sketches in which Jones and Smith run into farcical E.T.s.
The guns and gadgets threaten but never succeed in eclipsing the human talent, and for that, we must praise director Sonnenfeld.
