The movie is fun. It's hard not to like it, because Smith and Jones have so much charm and charisma.

Consensus: MIB has plenty of spectacle, but its clever script and charismatic leads are what carry the film. Its mixture of comedy and cool makes for a whole lot of fun.

Some 40 years later a founding father of the agency, Agent Kay (Tommy Lee Jones), finds himself with a new smart-mouthed partner fresh from the NYPD who is soon dubbed Agent Jay (Will Smith). Their first mission is to save the Earth from destruction by a giant insectlike alien (Vincent D'Onfrio) that, incidentally, drives an exterminator's truck. Armed with their matching Ray-Bans, skinny ties, and space-age weapons that Jay barely understands--he calls the Neuralyzer the "flashy thing"--the new duo begin another average day of fighting intergalactic terrorists. An amazingly hip and terribly clever movie that riffs on everything from E.T.--THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL to CASABLANCA, this Barry Sonnenfeld film is based on the equally savvy comic book by Lowell Cunningham. Reviews for Men In Black
Sonnenfeld keeps it all bubbling along with a vibrant, comic book buzz.
The casting is inspired; they complement each other as yin and yang of the film.
Those accepting Men in Black for what it is will likely agree that this is one of 1997's more satisfying big-budget offerings.
Helping, obviously, is a great cast, led by Jones, who actually gets some of the biggest laughs with his deadpan delivery.
Men in Black has the right attitude toward movie technology: Get the most sophisticated special effects money can buy, and treat 'em like one of Ed Wood's paper-plate UFOs.
Overall, the film is easy enough to watch, short enough not to have you care about the lame 1-2-3 plot, and funny enough to make you smile if you're feeling blue.
Like the Fiorentino character, you may not remember much. But you'll remember having fun.
There was never any doubt that Will Smith would be funny... What comes as a pleasant surprise is how funny Tommy Lee Jones is.
...thanks to Solomon's sparkling dialogue, Sonnenfeld's graceful economy, and a steady visual inventiveness, Men in Black takes the radical step of assuming that its audience is hip and smart, and it shines with that generous act of complicity.
The film never takes itself that seriously, but manages to deliver consistent, but never huge, laughs.
Like the inky void of space, there's really not much here, but what there is, is certainly entertaining
Ed Solomon's script, based on the comic book by Lowell Cunningham, is a barrage of funny lines and scenes of just how strange things can be dealing with aliens.
It is a light and refreshing diversion, a perfect way to spend a few hours of your summer.
I often feel like I see jokes coming a mile away in things purported to be comedies. In Men in Black, they snuck up behind me and tickled me.
Smith's natural, infectious ebullience plays off well against the stoic Jones, who's at his deadpan best, engaging in some ridiculous situations with the straightest of faces.
Forget the crappy music video, forget the Raybans commercial tie-ins, forget all the crappy hype that the studio felt compelled to spew forth, just go rent this film, stock up on popcorn and have a fun night.
