Critics Consensus: Men in Black III Is Solid Fun

Plus, Chernobyl Diaries wasn't screened for critics, and Moonrise Kingdom is Certified Fresh

This week at the movies, we've got galaxy defenders (Men in Black III, starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones) and a haunted vacation (Chernobyl Diaries, starring Jesse McCartney and Jonathan Sadowski). What do the critics have to say?

Men in Black III

70%

In the world of franchise moviemaking, the third time is rarely, if ever, the charm. So it's something of a surprise to report that the critics say Men in Black III is unexpectedly solid, a fun popcorn flick with excellent special effects and enough laughs to overcome its sporadic moments of mediocrity. This time out, Agent J (Will Smith) learns that his old partner Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) is in grave danger. In order to rescue K -- and save the future of humanity -- J must travel back in time and team up with K's younger self (Josh Brolin). The pundits say Men in Black III doesn't approach the giddy heights of the first MIB, but it's a generally agreeable piece of multiplex fare, and Smith is charismatic as always. (Check out this week's Total Recall, in which we count down Smith's best-reviewed movies.)

Chernobyl Diaries

20%

It's never a good sign when a movie is released before being screened for critics, and unfortunately that's the case with Chernobyl Diaries. Produced by Paranormal Activity director Oren Peli, it's the story of a group of American tourists who decide to spice up their European vacation by heading to the site of history's worst nuclear disaster. When they arrive, however, our heroes discover that they're stranded -- and they're not alone. Guess the Tomatometer! (And don't forget to check out Peli's Five Favorite Films here.)

I'm still hesitant about going to see Men in Black III, it just doesn't interest me.
I do however want to see Chernobyl Diaries, it has me intrigued.

I still have to wait a month before we get "Moonrise" in my neck of the woods. Not interested in anything else. Josh Brolin looks like the real draw in MIB3, but it can wait for video. I wouldn't mind catching "Battle Royale" in 3D, but I wouldn't want to pay 15 bucks for it. Good week to catch up on rentals.

When I first saw the trailer of MIB 3 on youtube (and later the 3D one before I saw Avengers) I thought to myself that it looks worse than the first film but better than the dissappointing 3rd film, and it seems this film reviews almost at the midpoint between MIB 91% and MIB2 39%. Despite looking 2 decades too old (although I guess that's part of the joke) Brolin is very believable as a young Tommy Lee Jones. This film will probably the one that finally knocks out Avengers. Anywhere between a $80-$110 million debut for Friday-Sunday plus maybe an extra $10 million if you count memorial day.

Chernobyl Diaries will probably get around 30%. Doesn't seem particularly bad to me in the previews, but it adheres so close to typical horror/slasher cliches its almost a joke. Also I don't know why Paramount is releasing the film in the beginning of the summer season. My guess is that it will struggle to break 10 million over the 4 day weekend.

i doubt that, but i'll keep an open mind. MiB1 was great in 97 because it was new and weird. We never saw it before and it surprised us. That won't be the case this time.

MIB just isn't an original idea anymore. It might be better than the 2nd, but over kill has made even the 1st one boring.

Overkill? This is only the third film in fifteen years. Even the animated spin off series ended in 2001. It isn't as if the franchise has been shoved down our throats every second of every day since it's inception. Trilogies are the standard for most franchises at the outset because they represent the three act narrative structure 1st film= Act One, second film = Act II, and so on. While I'll agree that MiB 2 was disappointing , one thing the MiB franchise is not guilty of is overkill.

Agreed. 3 movies in 15 years is not overkill. Stupid statement.

There are those who would argue that anything beyond a successful first film, at least for some franchises, is overkill... especially in the cases of campier flicks. I don't really go along with that, but that doesn't make the argument (or any statements supporting it) stupid. And trilogies frequently being the Hollywood standard doesn't necessarily mean they SHOULD be done, lol. I would say that (at least in America) money, and NOT the "three act narrative structure", is the reason that trilogies are frequently the model. If the three act structure thing were really the usual motivation, then the stories would probably be better more often, lol.

Mister Vile

This is certainly true. But MiB is more about creativity with aliens and comedy between will smith and tommy lee jones than a three act narrative with deep thinking undertones and a coherent story. Movies like this tend to be better suited for sequels than most other series.

Glad somebody mentioned the animated series. Wasn't the show so criminally underrated! The first time I saw it I scoffed at it but when I actually watched it I was surprised at the quality of the writing, a lot of the humor worked as well.

Eh MIB 3 looks like a decent watch, but I doubt I will watch it. Chernobyl Diaries is most likely going to be rotten. I predict a 37%. Moonrise Kingdom has interest now, looking forward to that.

Being a Wes Anderson fan, Moonrise Kingdom is a must see. I really like the first MIB, but the second movie was very disappointing. Even though MIB3 is getting a fresh rating, I'm not really too interested. I'll wait for the blu-ray.

I plan to check out MIB3 soon. With a rating like that, I think the film will be decent and entertaining. Moonrise Kingdom looks funny and sweet but it will probably never play in a theater near me so I'll rent it when it's available.
