The directorial debut of acclaimed Indonesian cinematographer Yadi Sugandi and the first film in a Freedom Trilogy celebrating Indonesian national history, Merah Putih (aka The Red and The White, another name for the Indonesian flag), is a sweeping historical epic that follows a band of soldiers fighting for their country's independence from the Dutch in 1947. The all-star cast is a veritable who's who of Indonesian cinema -- Lukman Sardi, Donny Alamsyah, Darius Sinathrya, and T. Rifnu Wikana --

This cliché-ridden war story from Indonesian director Yadi Sugandi suggests that the Dutch occupation of Indonesia in the post-war period played out like a tawdry TV movie made with the help of a dressing-up box and lots of fake blood and fireworks.
The historical events may be little known but everything else from the swelling score to the cardboard characters feels all too familiar.
In the end it resorts to slow-motion violence, confirming its mediocrity.
With the score swelling ludicrously every time the leads so much as scratch their heads, this would-be creation myth falls flat on its face.
