In this depressing Japanese drama, a grocer continues to operate her husband's business long after he has killed himself. Her brother-in-law has been in love with her for ages. Eventually she gives in, and a romance blooms until she suddenly rejects him in favor of her husband's memory.

this is the finest melodrama i have ever seen. in a side note: i don't know why so many synopses refer to reiko's husband as a suicide when he was clearly killed in the war. anyway, the height of naruse and takemine's work, along with 'floating clouds'
