Consensus: It may not Woody Allen's best work, but the frothy, fun A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy is still worth a look.

At a beautiful farmhouse in upstate New York, wealthy Andrew passes his summer days tinkering as a hack inventor and attempting to make love with his frigid wife, Adrian. Then Leopold, a self-possessed scholar, and his future wife, the highly sexed Ariel, come for a visit. The second couple in the mix is Maxwell, a doctor, and his current girlfriend, Dulcy, a nurse who advises Adrian on her sex life. It turns out that Andrew once had an innocent romance with Ariel, but he's one of the very few men she has met and not slept with. Now Andrew is very much interested in Ariel again--and she in him. And thus begins this whimsical farce of lust, love, and longing among friends. [More]

It's one of Allen's lightest trifles, but it too contains enough funny jokes and fantasy moments to make it a small treasure.

A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy circles around the nuances of love-a web that both tantalizes and confounds Americans.

There doesn't seem to be a driving idea behind it, a confident tone to give us the sure notion that Allen knows what he wants to do here.

It's funny and sweet in spots, though the light moments get lost in the haze of imitation and ambitiousness.

A poor second fiddle to stuff like Porky's.

This Midsummer’s Night is fun, witty, and wild, although ultimately forgettable.

A pleasant disappointment, pleasant because he gets all the laughs he goes for in a visually charming, sweetly paced picture, a disappointment because he doesn't go for more.

Warm, romantic and old-fashioned.

It's not classic Woody, but it has a warmly human attractiveness about it.

Top-flight Allen. Probably his most gorgeous color film.

Not among Woody's most memorable, but it's still pleasant enough to warrant a visit.
