Writer Chris Carter's popular folluw-up to THE X-FILES, MILLENNIUM first aired during the countdown to the 21st Century, and exhibited a dark, ominous tone that reflected the public's trepidation that a turn of the century historically tends to inspire. Frank Black (Lance Henriksen) has recently retired from his position as a profiler for the FBI. Relocating to his hometown of Seattle, he arrives just in time for an onslaught of brutal murders inflicted on local women. He decides to come out of retirement and use his unique gift to help solve the mystery, which involves him watching murders from the killer's perspective through a psychic ability. It is this aspect that gives the show its decidedly creepy tone, as the audience watches Frank struggle to prevent murders from happening while he attempts to maintain his own sanity. Much like Michael Mann's MANHUNTER, the success of the detective, ostensibly on the right side of the law, paradoxically lies in his ability to become like the criminal. Season 1 features the Pilot episode and "Gehenna," which was later novelized by Lewis Gannett; other episodes include "Dead Letters," "The Judge," "Kingdom Come," "The Wild and the Innocent," "Loin Like a Hunting Flame," and "The Thin White Line," among others.
