New "Trek" Writers to Tread Carefully
By now you've already heard that "MI3" director J.J. Abrams will be producing and/or directing a new installment in Paramount's "Star Trek" franchise, and he'll be bringing his writing team of Kurtzman & Orci with him. And it seems like the scribe team has its head on straight regarding old-school "Trek" lore and how to be true to the series.
From IGN FilmForce: "We know the mythology well, and we are fans of the novels that happen between the movies and all that kind of stuff … and we do know that there is a space [sic] to begin to see a lot of the origins of a lot of the things we know and we're going to start there. We're very mindful of being totally true to the mythology and totally true to what's come there, and in a way try to embrace the fact there's such a rich history to it that this is not a case of trying to come in and be so clever that you're going to reinvent everything. It's a case of coming in and using the stuff you know is great and you know really works and not violating anything that's come before it."

It implys that they may be stupid enough to do a prequel to the original series and it is not hard to predict that a move like that would result in Trek digging it's grave deeper. (Reply to this) |

Reel 2/Dialogue 2 writes: on Jun 09 2006 10:51 AM In reply to this comment (#837690) The "origin" that came before this was in the way of Bermanesque revisionism, so it's kinda hard to get used to a Trek that could return to its roots. I'm looking forward to neon-colored pajama uniforms and conical warp engines in widescreen. Oh, and some bull about "story" and "character". (Reply to this) |

phranq writes: on Jun 09 2006 10:12 PM GIVE IT A BREAK!!! We cried out for years to get Braha(?) out of Paramount and stop screwing up our franchise for his own selfish gain. Yes, ST did well because we kept hoping for it to return in quality. Our hope translated into weekly viewings of DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise (albeit in lowering numbers). This translated into money for the station via advertising. This translated into Braha and company getting RAISES and pats on the back! Cycle, rinse, repeat. WE created the problem. Since they (nor Paramount) had the decency to leave, they sucked any life that WAS left in the franchise. NOW, they are still so desperate and greedy they are taking ANOTHER cheap attempt to cash in on not only OUR hard earned money but ALL THE EXCELLENT WRITING, ACTING, ETC. of the past 40 years! We are sorry Paramount that we have no interest right now... but YOU CREATED THIS! Take your just deserts. Give Star Trek a break. Allow it to grow again within its beloved community... NOT within stockholders and another group of Hollywood hopefuls whoring such a beautiful and intelligent American sub-culture. (Reply to this) |

medicineman writes: on Jun 10 2006 03:08 AM New Cast for Orginal Characters I got back from a business trip in Germany Thursday where Star Trek has large fan base and a television article there implied that Abrams is going to start from scratch similar to Batman Begins; all new actors playing all the original characters, Kirk, Spock, Scotty, Bones, etc and also introduce a few new characters as well. It said that he wants to start the original Star Trek again with a fresh new look with a harder edge much the way Batman and Superman. (Reply to this) |

mstiefan writes: on Jun 11 2006 07:11 PM Sounds like the same old song and dance I remember when they got Logan to pen Star Trek 10, everybody said, "ohh, he's a fan of the show, he'll get it right." Look what he came up with. Casual fans of the show shouldn't be writing screenplays. Going back to the beginning would be silly, esp with a whole new enterprise cast. There is only one scotty, mccoy, kirk, spock, etc. They lost a perfect storyline for star trek ten by not involving spock in a story about romulan unity, instead wasting the story on weird slave races and clones who don't even look like the clones they should look like. I have to disagree about above comments concerning the quality of DS9. Yes, season 7 wasn't as good since they kinda just threw the whole new trill host in there. Voyager was good until they bowed down to the network heads and wrote in 7 o' 9 just for the young male audience. Here's the thing. There are good stories to be had in the current trek universe. They can go back to the beginning but only if its played with genuine fun, like the DS9 episode when they went back in time to the tribble episode. Heck, i'd watch an entire movie based on the G4 Trek 2.0 promo puppets before wastching another actor play scotty. (Reply to this) |
