Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt, this time battling wits with rogue IMF agent Sean Ambrose (Dougray Scott). Hunt is ordered to recruit Ambrose's former lover, Nyah Hall (Thandie Newton), to infiltrate his hideout. But Hunt never expected to fall for the lovely young thief he must use for bait. The romantic triangle that ensues gives the film a unique emotional balance that is unusual (and most welcome) for an action picture. Ambrose is after the killer Chimera virus and its antidote, Bellerophon; in the old days Ambrose would have been after world domination, but in this new world order of day trading and Internet stocks, all he wants is to corner the market and make a fortune. Woo outdoes even himself with a flurry of martial-arts fights, fiery shootouts, thrilling mountain climbing, and blazing motorcycle chases that lead from the beautiful peaks of Utah through the busy streets of Sydney. All of this is set to a booming hard-rock soundtrack that battles with the explosions and blasting guns for ear space. And he doesn't fail to include his trademark birds fluttering like peaceful interludes in the most threatening of moments. [More]

Woo is a singularly graceful filmmaker, a true believer in the power of elegant stunt choreography and the infinite allure of the human face.

Woo is not able to make the action scenes believable or enjoyable.

If you're the type of person who is drawn to action movies and James Bond thrillers, then I hope you're going mostly for the adrenaline, for the action, and for the fun of it. If so, I feel safe in recommending MI2.

The problems here can be summed up thus: 'Produced by Tom Cruise.'

Mission: Impossible 2 is pure escapism and never pretends to be anything else.

In the end, Mission: Impossible 2 is really The Tom Cruise Show, and it's not an entirely successful endeavor.

This flick has little intrigue to tie it to its namesake and it comes off more like a very expensive John Woo spoof.

There are graceful Woo touches even outside the action scenes, like the swaying of sheep as a helicopter buzzes their pen in the Outback. But it's not enough to get over the blandness.

A thoroughbred racehorse of a movie: sleek, fast, graceful and utterly devoid of intellectual content.

at times he gets carried away, still true, Woo is cool. This mission would have been next to impossible without him.
