Becker's humanism is unwavering, even when confronting such stereotypes as the rich American philistine or the uncomprehending working man.

Reviews for Montparnasse 19
The one bright spot is Miss Palmer, who acts with the breezy air of one who looks upon drunken artists as amusements. Maybe that's the way to look at this film.
As a whole, the film is somewhat of a failure for Becker, but there are enough fine moments to recommend it.
A hauntingly moving portrait about the last year or so in the life of the early 20th-century painter Modigliani.
A highly personal effort by one of the idols of the New Wave generation.
