Joe (Gyllenhaal) is grieving over the death of his fiancee, Diana, and is living with her parents, Ben (Hoffman) and JoJo (Sarandon). Though Joe just wants to do what's right, he openly admits that he has no plan, no answers, and needs time to sort things out. Meanwhile, Ben and JoJo cling to him as their only hope after losing their daughter, and the rest of the world expects him to bounce back into dating without a moment's pause. Joe's awkwardness and unquenchable efforts to be helpful provide for some touching and softly comedic moments. The New England setting of the film, the '60s cars and clothes, and the excellent soundtrack (Sly & The Family Stone, T-Rex, Bob Dylan) provide enough atmosphere to move this emotional story right along. But it isn't until Joe meets another woman (Ellen Pompeo), who also lost someone she loved, that he regains hope and begins to be true to himself and to the people around him. [More]

  • Moonlight Mile
  • Oscar® winners Dustin Hoffman (Best Actor, 1980, Kramer vs. Kramer), Susan Sarandon (Best Actress, 1996, Dead Man Walking), and Holly Hunter (Best Actress, 1994, The Piano) star with Jake Gyllenhaal (The Good Girl) in Moonlight Mile -- an uplifting story of endearing honesty and humor. When Joe Nast (Gyllenhaal) experiences an unexpected loss, he wants to be the man he believes everyone wants him to be -- the dutifully bereaved husband-to-be and the perfect would-be son-in-law to Ben (Hoffman) and Jojo (Sarandon). But then another woman unexpectedly enters his life, and he's torn between fulfilling his new roles and following his heart.

Moonlight Mile treats grief like a new product on the Home Shopping Network, wrapping it in bright packaging, giving it a snappy catchphrase and offering a special deal that's good only for the next two hours.

"Moonlight Mile" is like a defanged "In the Bedroom," but it finds emotional truth amidst its gimmickry.

In his determination to lighten the heavy subject matter, Silberling also, to a certain extent, trivializes the movie with too many nervous gags and pratfalls.

A funny/sad family melodrama that is neither as funny nor as sad as it wants to be.

The individual parts of the film are much better than the whole. But it's high-minded and worth experiencing for those parts: the performances, the alternately funny or touching scenes.

Silberling can't resist stretching this initially affecting story past its breaking point, resulting in a pat, predictable drama with the emotional depth of a TV movie.

[Brad] Silberling has prescribed a self-cathartic cinematic tale that both spiritually allows him to deal with a tremendous personal tragedy while also sharing a powerfully written dramatic narrative, filled with tenderness and comic flourishes, with his

Not as powerful a film as last year's In the Bedroom, which focused on a similar family tragedy. But it's more realistic, and more moving in many ways.

Sarandon, Hoffman and the still-emerging Gyllenhall all deliver great performances, but this sad-sack flick falls short of its potential.
