Joe (Gyllenhaal) is grieving over the death of his fiancee, Diana, and is living with her parents, Ben (Hoffman) and JoJo (Sarandon). Though Joe just wants to do what's right, he openly admits that he has no plan, no answers, and needs time to sort things out. Meanwhile, Ben and JoJo cling to him as their only hope after losing their daughter, and the rest of the world expects him to bounce back into dating without a moment's pause. Joe's awkwardness and unquenchable efforts to be helpful provide for some touching and softly comedic moments. The New England setting of the film, the '60s cars and clothes, and the excellent soundtrack (Sly & The Family Stone, T-Rex, Bob Dylan) provide enough atmosphere to move this emotional story right along. But it isn't until Joe meets another woman (Ellen Pompeo), who also lost someone she loved, that he regains hope and begins to be true to himself and to the people around him. [More]

  • Moonlight Mile
  • Oscar® winners Dustin Hoffman (Best Actor, 1980, Kramer vs. Kramer), Susan Sarandon (Best Actress, 1996, Dead Man Walking), and Holly Hunter (Best Actress, 1994, The Piano) star with Jake Gyllenhaal (The Good Girl) in Moonlight Mile -- an uplifting story of endearing honesty and humor. When Joe Nast (Gyllenhaal) experiences an unexpected loss, he wants to be the man he believes everyone wants him to be -- the dutifully bereaved husband-to-be and the perfect would-be son-in-law to Ben (Hoffman) and Jojo (Sarandon). But then another woman unexpectedly enters his life, and he's torn between fulfilling his new roles and following his heart.

More than makes up for its mawkish posing by offering rousing spates of genuine feeling.

Never transcends its basically soapoperatic premise in the way that 'In the Bedroom' actually did...will be remembered more for its potential than for what it actually delivers.

This well-constructed narrative may embrace a more realistic view of how people feel after the death of a loved one than is generally admitted.

All the shell-shocked wryness, irredeemable remorse, and unaccountable will to survive that the movie attempts to embody are realized in Gyllenhaal, and the actor makes it possible to root for Moonlight Mile despite its flaws.

An inconsequential if effective little drama that commits its one fatal mistake by attempting to turn a personal tragedy into a metaphor for the blue zeitgeist of an entire decade.

Trouper that he is, a remarkable Gyllenhaal transcends Silberling's most calculated moves.

Though it sometimes suffers from TV-movie trappings and gets almost unbearably (and unbelievably) sappy at the end, for the most part, the film offers a compelling story.

Moonlight Mile feels authentic--in its grief, its hope, its eradicable sorrow and its outreach for happiness in the face of despair.

A movie at war with itself -- tuned into its characters' vicissitudes one moment, stumbling with awkward stabs at goofiness the next.

Tackles the difficult subject of grief and loss with such life-embracing spirit that the theme doesn't drag an audience down.

'Moonlight Mile' is a film of considerable substance. Sarandon, Hoffman, and Gyllenhaal give brilliant performances as people grieving over the loss of a loved one.
