When Emma Kusters' husband, a low-level factory laborer, snaps on the job, killing his foreman and sacrificing his own body to the machinery, it leaves her alone and the focus of a feud between the liberals and conservatives of the German government. As the political battle heat up, Emma faces the intrusion of a hypocritical leftist couple who insinuates themselves into her life in order to make a political example of her personal loss. Fassbinder's satire of liberal Socialism and his critical view of the German political system in the film was so scathing and controversial that it was banned from the Berlin Film Festival. [More]

Reviews for Mother Kusters Goes to Heaven
No other director understands the strength of mediocre minds as does Fassbinder; when his films don't slip into derision, they can be ineffably moving, as this one is.
The provocative filmmaker manages to show worker exploitation on the left while still hitting hard at the right.
