The first film follows a boxer's dramatic saga in edgy black and white; the second, in color, is a throwback to the golden days of the musical comedy. Very familiar with both genres, Donen gives these stories the edge that most satire directors would miss, and it's a credit to him that he can mock films that made his own name famous.
