Average Rating:6/10

Consensus: Although this action-romance suffers from weak writing and one too many explosions, the chemistry generated by onscreen couple Pitt and Jolie is palpable enough to make this a thoroughly enjoyable summer action flick.

Rated: PG-13 [See Full Rating] for sequences of violence, intense action, sexual content and brief strong language

Runtime: 2 hrs 10 mins

Genre: Action/Adventure

Theatrical Release:2004

Box Office: $186,064,011

SMITH is really its own ball of flaming wax, with enough sizzling chemistry between stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt to blow up a small building. He shows he is equally adept in comedy and action, and she manages to set new screen standards of bad-ass sexiness. It's impossible to dislike this pair, or a movie that makes being married seem like such insane fun. Pitt and Jolie play extremely skilled professional assassins who have managed to stay married for five years without ever realizing each other's profession because they work for rival agencies and the work is top secret. When their paths eventually cross on a high-level hit, one of the most lethal battles of the sexes in the history of cinema is officially on. Thanks to a genuinely witty script, the issue isn't who will win, but whether the couple will realize they are meant for each other before it's too late. Director Doug Liman was obviously the right choice for the material, having proved his ability to fuse engaging romance with knuckle-biting action in 2002's THE BOURNE IDENTITY. The comedy is sophisticated and witty, the action is visceral and intense, and there is plenty of satisfying eye candy. Another plus is Vince Vaughn as a fast-talking fellow hit man who lives with his mother. The cinematography is by Bozan Bajelli (the genius behind Abel Ferrara's best mid-1980s work) who imbues each environment, whether it's the Smith's house, or the urban streets--with its own evocative color scheme and feel. Palpable sexual electricity between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie provides Mr. and Mrs. Smith with all the power it needs to overcome a very silly plot.

...it’s all a lot of fun. Still, it’s hard not to be bothered by the movie’s utter lack of concern for ... even [a] minimal level of plausibility and plot logic...

The movie revels in its bemused overkill, which is fun for a while before it grows wearisome, but there's no denying that the mutual hostility looks good on the two stars.

Finishes well and Vince Vaughn rocks. However, runs rather slow, save for the last half hour.

Leaves out some things you would think necessary, includes some you wouldn't expect, and in the process comes up with an original, ceaselessly entertaining summer concoction.

Frisky and subversive, the movie argues that it's only after destroying icons of domesticity (and literally blowing up the McMansion) we can finally get to know one another.

A braver movie would have seen the couple's standoff through to its logical conclusion -- the eventual insistence on happily ever after seems more than a little weaselly.

When you see this movie, you can understand why the rest of the world thinks Americans are crazy. Mr. and Mrs. Smith are both assassins who work for rival 'companies.' We’re not supposed to ask whom they kill or why.

Echoing the black wit of the Jack Nicholson/Kathleen Turner classic Prizzi's Honor (1985) but with a screwball pace and doses of hi-tech action, it's not to be missed.

A full-on action flick, subversive rom-com and weapons-grade star vehicle that’s drenched in Tinseltown glitz, from a director who knows how to put the money on the screen while his tongue’s firmly in his cheek.

If you've got a script full of fatuous repartee and an inept director (who was banned from the "Bourne" sequel), you're not going to have an entertainment worth diddlysquat.

The sheer weight and volume of mayhem toward the end is numbing and meaningless, and two hours is a good 25 minutes more than such a frail conceit can sustain.
