Question about one of the final scenes. (possible spoiler)

In one of the last scenes where the uncle is diving, who is asleep and snoring in the boat?

Not an answer to your question but...if you notice one of the first scenes in the movie are kids see the exact same view of open water Mud and buddy see. It could be that Mud really is dead and Tom got killed too. He said the kids reminded him of himself. Maybe their spirits entered into the boys. Or, maybe the Boys are representations of Tom and Mud as kids. Or, maybe the kids represented Tom and Mud in spirit and they never existed.

From what I can guess there must be a scene left out that shows the guy in the boat waking up when he hears the bell, then seeing the body in the water floating by and grabs it. That would be enough to make sense.

Well the problem is that it's clearly a dead body floating by. But the only reason for that scene is to imply that they definitely did pull his body out of the river. As to the final scene, if Mud was dead they'd hardly go through all the complications of Tom going down into the hold and drag the injured Mud up topside. The details tell you that they are supposed to be real, alive and set free to sail into the Gulf. Tom being ex-CIA would know all about getting fake IDs and living off the grid. BTW, that 70HP engine the kids stole would be worth around $150 in non-running cond. (which it was) but weighs over 200 lbs. No way they hauled it to their boat and then out of it. And where did the marine gas come from?? Also earlier they looked into the hold where the INBOARD ENGINE used to be and said, "The engine's missing!" Later, magically, it's an OUTBOARD boat. Gimme a break.

How is it that Mud never ran out of smokes while living alone on that island? the boys never brought him cigs.

Maybe he wasn't really a heavy smoker and found a bunch on the boat or island etc...

His friend. They showed him during the early part of the movie.

The guy he works with. I'm actually curious as to who found Mud, because in the first shot we see of his body, Michal Shannon's character, Uncle Galen spotted him while under the water. But Mud is recovered, and it's Sam Shepard who has him and take him out into the open waters (I presumed his real true love). The coming of age message of this film was that love can be a back stabber XD

I've thought about that ever since seeing the film, I think that we're led to believe that it was Tom Blankenship that left after the gun fight and found him. The reason being that Galen sees him underwater and pulls on his cord which rings the bell on the boat and his friend is asleep, presumably drunk since we see several empty beer cans strewn around him. So Galen can't get back up to the boat to go and get Mud, also Galen has no knowledge of Mud throughout the film (other than seeing the boys with him that one time on the island) so he wouldn't know to save him or help him. He also has the speech about "trash washing up from the river" and it's presumed he would not help Mud since that's what he's really talking about. And they also mention that Tom hasn't been seen since the night of the gun fight. I'm guessing that after the fight, Tom takes off in his boat, finds Mud downriver and takes him to the island where the boat is, patches him up and they take off together.

I see now. But at the same time in the end Reese Witherspoon AND freedom just wasn't the way out? It was one or the other for Mud?

It is untidy that the bad guys are gone and the supposed lovers simply blow each other off for good for no good reason. Just because Reece was hangin' with some guy. BTW, Mud is supposed to be this huge liar, but what did he ever lie about?? Seems like he was dead straight about everything.
