Consensus: Exploring themes of family duty and honor, Mulan breaks new ground as a Disney film, while still bringing vibrant animation and sprightly characters to the screen.

When barbarous Huns attack ancient China, the fiercely independent Mulan (voiced by Ming-Na Wen) defies tradition by disguising herself as a man in order to take her ailing father's place in the Imperial Army. With the help of Mushu (voiced by the resilient and newly kid-friendly Eddie Murphy), a wisecracking guardian dragon sent by her ancestors for protection, Mulan trains in boot camp and then heads off to face the brutal Hun leader Shan-Yu (voiced by Miguel Ferrer)--all the while struggling to keep her gender identity a secret. Chock full of the usual Disney delights--breathtaking visuals, catchy songs, and an inspirational protagonist of courage and conviction--MULAN is a welcome addition to the studio's annals of classic animation. Boy, it's hard not to keep thinking that this movie is basically Yentl with a nose job.

In the end, Mulan isn't bad - it's just mediocre, which is particularly disappointing given its Disney pedigree.

The animators have clearly done their research, but while the film’s cultural specificity isn’t distasteful per se, it’s still pretty soulless.

This is the most inert and formulaic of recent Disney animated films, right down to the clowning sidekicks and would-be ''Under the Sea'' production number.

A disappointment for anyone hoping the studio would raise the standard of the animated feature to a new level.

Goes about halfway toward setting new boundaries for Disney's, and the industry's, animated features, but doesn't go far enough.

Yes, that's right, it's Disney's 36th animated feature and if there's one less memorable then I can't remember seeing it.

Mulan will set a new standard by which future animated efforts by Disney and other studios will have to work hard to attain.

Lush and exotic... but we are cheated out of the two best songs in any Disney animated feature--the songs by the comic sidekick and the villain

The Disney studios has its formula for annual, full-length animated features down so pat that it's hard to remember which one you're watching at any given moment.
