When barbarous Huns attack ancient China, the fiercely independent Mulan (voiced by Ming-Na Wen) defies tradition by disguising herself as a man in order to take her ailing father's place in the Imperial Army. With the help of Mushu (voiced by the resilient and newly kid-friendly Eddie Murphy), a wisecracking guardian dragon sent by her ancestors for protection, Mulan trains in boot camp and then heads off to face the brutal Hun leader Shan-Yu (voiced by Miguel Ferrer)--all the while struggling to keep her gender identity a secret. Chock full of the usual Disney delights--breathtaking visuals, catchy songs, and an inspirational protagonist of courage and conviction--MULAN is a welcome addition to the studio's annals of classic animation. Reviews for Mulan
Mulan is the latest Disney goldmine to hit thousands of screens and millions of Happy Meals.
It has very serious themes, but it is also quite consistently funny, demonstrating a perfect balance never before reached by the folks at Disney.
Disney's latest animated feature hearkens back to its heyday fare, a sweet and captivating tale that pits gentle, enduring goodness against dark, malevolent forces.
This is uplifting and often very funny, thanks to a genius turn by Eddie Murphy.
A welcome reminder that some in the studio system still allow kids' pictures to be made which are good, which are true, and give them the freedom to dream.
Everyone will be entertained the fast-moving plot and rich animation.
This is the most inert and formulaic of recent Disney animated films, right down to the clowning sidekicks and would-be ''Under the Sea'' production number.
Mulan is quick, funny, has genuine warmth and is certainly better than almost anything else out there that is aimed at children.
The incredible special effects, which make lush cherry blossoms as vivid as the intense battle scenes, are balanced by Disney's tradition of care and painstaking detail in developing and animating its characters.
Murphy steals the show as the voice of Mushu, the best Disney sidekick in recent memory.
The most self-assured and by all indications the most successful Disney 'toon in years...
Even at its silliest it is fun, and at times the images on the screen are the most impressive of any Disney animated film to date.
Mulan is dragged down by insipid songs that feel tacked on and silly, inappropriate sidekicks and secondary characters.
Disney's tried-and-true blend of populist instincts and weightier interests is back in full force and top form.
The originality of the artwork and the energy of the story make it seem fresh.
