The mistake of The Mummy Returns is to abandon the characters, and to use the plot only as a clothesline for special effects and action sequences.

The Mummy Returns moves far too quickly to say that it gets bogged down in special effects. It's more like it goes dizzy with them.

The Mummy Returns is all about fighting, and there's almost none of the humor and old-fashioned silliness that made The Mummy such fun.

There is almost unceasing loudness, numerous explosions, a lot of action and mayhem. But it all seems strangely soulless and hollow.

Feels like so much scrap metal picked up off the factory floor at the place where they made the first one.

Feels like treading of the same old ground. And that's likely because no one here has really evolved.

Watching The Mummy Returns is like standing behind someone playing a pretty cool video game. You may feel some vicarious excitement, but eventually you'd rather experience your own thrills.

"It's eye-candy, aimed at a PG-13 audience and plays like a big-screen video game - or, better yet, a new ride at Universal's Orlando theme park."
