This time, the Broken Lizard troupe--Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske--send up two genres at once, combining the spring-break romp with the gory slasher picture. It's spring break on Pleasure Island, Costa Rica, and bikini-clad revelers have just landed to spend the next week partying their days and nights away. There's Dave (Soter), the drug-wielding DJ; Putman (Chandrasekhar), the ambiguously accented tennis instructor; Juan (Lemme), the diving guru; Sam (Stolhanske), the Fun Sheriff; Lars (Heffernan), the incredibly gifted masseur; and Coconut Pete (Bill Paxton), the flaky island guru. Then there is Jenny (Brittany Daniel), the gorgeous aerobics instructor, and newcomer Penelope (Jordan Ladd), who falls under the spell of Juan. Unfortunately, someone else has arrived on the island with a machete and a deep dislike of several of the camp's residents. As the blood begins to flow, and flow, and keep flowing, everyone becomes a suspect, until no one can trust anyone else. Directed with a casual touch by Chandrasekhar, CLUB DREAD proves that Broken Lizard is a very talented group of performers with the ability to find humor in the least likely of places. SUPER TROOPERS: Broken Lizard, a comedy troupe made up of former students at Colgate University, wrote and star in the enjoyably lightweight comedy SUPER TROOPERS. They play state troopers who preside over a quiet stretch of highway in Vermont. The low crime rate allows them time to pursue their own interests--mostly playing elaborate pranks on each other and on the hapless speeders they stop. Their captain, O'Hagan (Brian Cox), asks them to settle down for a while, because the governor (an amusing cameo by TV's former WONDER WOMAN, Lynda Carter) is thinking of cutting off their funding and turning their precious highway over to the jurisdiction of the hated local cops, headed by the sneaky Chief Grady (Daniel Von Bargen). The wild and not very bright troops are unable to stay out of trouble, so they'll only keep their jobs if they somehow manage to crack a big drug case. Director Jay Chandrasekhar (who also stars as the smartest trooper, Thorny) does a great job of keeping things quick and light, and the easy camaraderie of the Broken Lizard troupe gives even the grossest humor in the film an appealingly playful quality, harking back to the innocent days of movies like STRIPES. DUDE, WHERE'S MY CAR: Jesse (Ashton Kutcher) and Chester (Seann William Scott) got really wasted last night. The fridge is packed with pudding, their girlfriends--"The Twins"--are ticked off, and somehow Jesse's car has disappeared. So the hapless stoners set out to find the car, which happens to have their girlfriends' anniversary presents in it. But they soon discover that losing the car isn't half the story. High school bombshell Christie (Kristy Swanson) is mysteriously hot for Jesse, Chester is a favorite customer at the local topless club, and they owe a suitcase full of money to a transvestite stripper. On top of all that, they're being pursued by a minivan full of geeks, horny "space babes," and a couple of "totally gay" Scandinavian dudes--all trying to find the "continuum transfunctioner," the device that can save or destroy the universe. Duuude.... DUDE's comic formula is pretty simple: throw the dudes in one bizarre situation after another and watch them goof their way out. Given the movie's PG-13 rating, it all lands on the lighter side of the teen-comedy spectrum, and if angry ostriches, donut-loving cops, a 50-foot bimbo in a miniskirt, and a pot-smoking dog sound like a good combo, DUDE has got a deal for you.
