A surprisingly decent bit of fun to close out summer's dog days.

The Musketeer is not a film you should rush to see, but it does have a few high points that make it worth checking out.

Philip Harrison's superb production design, Raymond Hughes and Cynthia Dumont's wide range of costumes, Gigi Lepage's gowns for Deneuve and David Arnold's rightly thundering score all help bring alive Dumas' romantic, tumultuous world one more time.

To his credit, Hyams keeps what little story he's retained from Dumas' book moving at a jaunty pace.

Thrilling, mindless, popcorn-crunching entertainment that will get your adrenaline pumping, put a smile on your face and make you long for a time when a sword was more natural to carry than a cell phone.

Good mindless fun, just the thing for a weekend matinee.

Despite isolated awkward and downright poor stints of dialogue and editing, the magnificence of the cinematography, pace, choreography and acting prevail!

Hyams is hoping that the newfangled wall-climbing swordplay will compensate for the inexperience of the young and relatively unknown cast members populating most of the central roles. It doesn't.
