When their aging mother is faced with encroaching infirmity, middle-aged brother and sister Emilie (Catherine Deneuve) and Antoine (Daniel Auteuil) are surreptitiously reunited after years of estrangement. Familial conflict is brought to the foreground after the mother moves in with Emilie and her family, and her uncomfortable presence draws attention to Emilie's unhappiness and Antoine's instability. Old bonds are resurrected when Emily is forced to defend her eccentric bachelor brother to her bourgeois family at a Christmas dinner reunion. Antoine begins to care for both his sister and his dying mother as suburban family life unravels in time with the gloriously filmed seasons in the French countryside. Emily and Antoine relive their youthful intimacy as they cling to each other for support. Generational differences come into sharp contrast as their mother recalls that their father's dying wish was for his children to be modern, only now regretting that they have become too modern to care for their dying mother. Emilie's troubled marriage and her own distanced children, struggling into their adulthood, demonstrate that the way she learned from her mother to approach youth, aging, and death has been carried through to her own family. Reviews for My Favorite Season
One of those intriguing films that functions without a plot, and uses instead an intense curiosity about its characters.
Despite a few psychological explosions here and there, the drama is muted most of the way and it's sometimes downright dull.
The film captures the joys and pains of real family life, never romanticizing them, and always presenting them with great perception and truthfulness.
