The game, a Mystery tradition, consists of locals, young and old, who gather weekly on a pond to play a serious game of hockey. A sports network sees big bucks in setting up an exhibition game between the Alaskans and the New York Rangers. Coming from mega-writer/producer Kelley and co-screenwriter O'Byrne, the film plays like a quirky blend of NORTHERN EXPOSURE and SLAPSHOT. [More]

Reviews for Mystery, Alaska
For as cold as it gets up north, these people sure make a warm picture.
It's a credit to the actors, director and writers that Mystery holds your attention.
...its emotions are so counterfeit that the Treasury Department should be alerted.
While sports may well be the toy department of life, hanging out there is often what creates and sustains community.
Kelley is obviously aware that to make the move from TV to films he must fill his scripts with greater depth and density.
It contains nothing more than weather and a set of one-dimensional cut-outs.
With so many characters and plotlines, it seems that TV king Kelley mistook this big-screen assignment for another network pilot.
These character sketches and inklings of romantic liaisons and family squabbles never coalesce into consequence or narrative.
Mystery, Alaska is sweet, pleasant, low-key, inoffensive and unnecessary.
There is life, death and hockey. And if that is your trinity, then Mystery, Alaska is your kind of movie.
The hockey game itself is nothing special, with neither the kinetic excitement nor the dramatic tension needed to bring the scenes to life.
Crowe gives the kind of thoughtful performance that suggests what Mystery, Alaska could have been if it had stayed in focus.
Conveys some of the thrill and ferocity of ice hockey while skillfully folding together multiple personal dramas.
A hybrid of sports movies and TV sitcoms with little originality and few surprises or memorably rough edges.
