Box Office Wrapup: New Films No Match For Scary Shia
by Gitesh Pandya | April 22, 2007
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Summary

In the battle of the single-word-titled thrillers, "Fracture" beat out "Vacancy" but neither could dislodge "Disturbia" from the number one spot this weeend. It was mostly a sluggish frame at the North American box office as the top ten slumped to its third worst level of 2007. Back to Article

What a horrendously weak box office this weekend, with the TOP film of the week grossing only $13.5 mil. That's just painful.

Thankfully, May's coming. And May's box office will be one for the record books.

Wow so people would rather see 300 and Blades of Glory twice than go to some crappy new movie sad.

What happened with Grindhouse?!?!? That movie should have grossed 40 mil by now! It's by far my favorite film of the year. 300 was suposed to be it, but it disappointed me a little (still an awesome movie). Grindhouse was my 2nd choice for spring and it surpassed my expectations. I wish it would have a better run at the theaters than it has had. At least DVD sales will save it from losing money which means there is still hope for these movies to be made in the future.

How much you want to bet Hot Fuzz would of done a lot better if it had opened at more than just 825 theaters?

I hope Hot Fuzz does get a deserved wider release because it was compltely genius. I think good word of mouth could really help this movie out a lot, too. Also, as mizzoucritic said, May is going to be record breaker. It'll make up for the box office suckage that was this weekend.

There's no correlation between a film's box office totals and the actual quality of the film. So I don't quite get especially where you are coming from. Grindhouse rocked completely and it's the fault of others who didn't see it for whatever reason. Yes, Spiderman 3 will generate 5 hundred million jillion gazillion dollars in its opening nanosecond but that doesn't mean the film won't blow chunks completely (doubt it). Dittos for P of the C part 3 which has a better chance of chunk blowing than Spiderman3 IMO. I repeat, there is no corrleation between box office and quality.

Anybody know why Hot Fuzz got an R Rating? It's been a few months, but I don't remember anything that would earn an R being in it or is it just the language? I do remember a few F bombs. It's kinda accepted here in the UK. They're on a whole new level of swearing.

I think there's some correlation. Look at the top 20 grossing movies of all time and there probably aren't a lot of stinkers on there, although I get what you're saying. A high gross is definately no "Guarantee".

Graphic Violence, mainly. Quite a lot of blood, actually.

Vacancy and In the Land of Women both were allright, was going to see Fracture but never got around to it, guess I'll see it this next weekend. Can't believe The Hoax is playing in that many theaters and is still not here, which sucks I would have liked to have seen it.

Really?, but the violence was so cartoonish. Oh well, the better for watching without annoying kids.

You have GOT to be kidding, right? Church steeple + head meld = R rating. Don't even get me started on the hedge shears.
