Ann Sothern closed out her MGM contract with the Technicolor musical Nancy Goes to Rio. As Frances Elliot, Sothern is billed second to Jane Powell, who plays Nancy Barklay. Who could completely resist a picture with Carmen Miranda having a bowl of fruit on top of her head?
Splashy and elaborate musical is tuneful and humorous. Ann Sothern, Jane Powell and Louis Calhern all give funny spirited performances in a plot that is of course absurd.
